Let's be honest. "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" was so bad we almost couldn't contain our disappointment in a glass case of emotion. There were too many celebrities, not enough Christina Applegate and most of the jokes stunk as badly as Brian Fantana's Sex Panther cologne.
However, Adam McKay, who co-wrote both the original and the sequel with Will Ferrell, recently explained his idea for a third installment in the franchise that doesn't sound half-bad.
When asked what "Anchorman 3" might be about, McKay revealed he wants to introduce Ron Burgundy to the Internet and maybe involve him in the Iraq War. We're not too sure about that last part.
"We talked about doing one that was about the rise of the new media," the "Funny or Die" founder told Yahoo! Movies. "I also thought it’d be cool to have Ron Burgundy get embedded in the Iraq War. We kicked around that idea. But we’ve never got that serious about it, but it would have to be the next stage of what the media has become ... I think it’s the Internet. The only thing is by then Burgundy would be getting pretty old. So maybe it’s a movie we make in 10 years, when Will’s aged up and it actually makes sense that you can set it in 1997 or 98."
He also explained how the message behind "Anchorman 2" -- "the satirical origin story of modern media" -- was largely misunderstood by audiences.
"We made the movie ... to talk about how [the emphasis on] ratings and for-profit [news] destroyed broadcast journalism as we know it," he said. "We loved the idea that Ron Burgundy was the one to think of it. I think we have been playing with [those ideas with] each movie through the years, sharpening the view."
Sorry, we were too distracted by Kanye West's starring turn as an MTV News reporter. Yeah, that happened.
