The city that never sleeps was rendered a ghost town.
One of the world’s most vibrant cities at night was desolate and barren early Tuesday morning after New Yorkers, staring down what was anticipated as a monster of a winter storm, heeded the dire warnings of city and state government officials and stayed indoors.
From Times Square to Penn Station, the most iconic and well-traveled parts of the city remained unblinking in their luminosity – albeit it devoid of life.
State of emergency was declared and experts predicted the blizzard would eclipse the 26.9 inches that fell on the city Feb. 12, 2006.
“This is literally the calm before the storm,” Mayor de Blasio warned Monday afternoon.
Port Authority and MTA officials shut down bridges and tunnels along with subway and bus service after 11 p.m. Monday, a de facto travel ban that had the intended effect. New York was a ghost town by midnight.
While parts of Long Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island got pounded by the nor’easter, snow accumulations in the city were modest overnight: 5.5 inches recorded in Central Park after midnight, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow plows alone roamed empty streets as commuters made a quick exit by mid-afternoon and locals emptied grocery shelves and hunkered down.
