CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Justin Anderson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel a 12-3 run in the second half and No. 3 Virginia pulled away to beat stubborn Davison 83-72 on Tuesday night.
Anthony Gill led the Cavaliers (12-0) with a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds. Malcolm Brogdon added 16, Anderson 14 and Darion Atkins 13 points and 10 rebounds as Virginia won its 18th in a row at home. The Cavaliers also reached 12-0 for the first time since Ralph Sampson was a junior in 1981-82.
Jack Gibbs scored 21 to lead Davidson (9-2), which had a seven-game winning streak snapped. The Wildcats also got 20 from Tyler Kalinoski and 14 from Brian Sullivan. Their point total was the highest against Virginia’s top-ranked defense this year, but well of their top-ranked 87.7 scoring average.
The game was the final out of conference game for both programs.
No. 5 LOUISVILLE 63, LONG BEACH STATE 48
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Terry Rozier scored 23 points, Montrezl Harrell added 16 and Louisville beat Long Beach State.
Putting away the 49ers took some effort for the Cardinals (12-1), who saw their 45-23 lead cut to 57-48 with 2:44 remaining. But Harrell closed the game with a jumper, a dunk and a layup as Louisville rebounded from Saturday’s loss to top-ranked Kentucky.
Rozier led the way with 7-of-14 shooting, seven rebounds and three assists for the Cardinals, who shot 51 percent and forced 19 turnovers. Louisville also made 6 of 15 3-pointers.
Branford Jones scored 13 points for Long Beach State (5-10), which closed an 0-6 road trip with 36 percent shooting. The 49ers played the Cardinals even on the boards (28-28) but were cold in key stretches.
No. 10 UTAH 85, CARROLL COLLEGE 49
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Jordan Loveridge returned after missing the last seven games to score 14 points and Utah routed Carroll College.
The junior forward was out after a minor knee surgery and quickly made an impact when he entered the game a few minutes in. Loveridge had five quick points, including a 3-pointer.
Utah (10-2) scored the first 12 points to take command early.
Oliver Carr led the Fighting Saints with 11 points, as the NAIA school fell to 10-4.
No. 12 MARYLAND 68, MICHIGAN STATE 66, 2 OT
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Dez Wells scored 16 points, including a tying 3 with 2.2 seconds left in regulation, and No. 12 Maryland earned a double-overtime win over Michigan State in the Terrapins’ first-ever Big Ten game.
Melo Trimble, just 2-for-13 from the field, added 15 points for Maryland (13-1), which used its size advantage for a 52-36 edge on the boards.
Travis Trice scored 26 points for the Spartans (9-5, 0-1), who had just one double-figure scorer in 50 minutes.
The Terrapins’ other big edge was going 26-for-32 from the foul line, all after halftime, while Michigan State missed great chances at the end of regulation and the first overtime.
No. 13 KANSAS 78, KENT STATE 62
LAWRENCE, Kansas (AP) – Freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 20 points and Perry Ellis added 15 to help Kansas beat Kent State.
Jimmy Hall scored 13 points and eight rebounds, and Khaliq Spicer added 11 points and five rebounds for Kent State (8-4).
Blunders and bloopers were evident early for Kansas (10-2). On the first possession of the game, Oubre turned the ball over. Wayne Selden Jr. missed a dunk. The entire team ended up on the floor going after a loose ball.
No. 14 NOTRE DAME 87, HARTFORD 60
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Demetrius Jackson led four players in double figures with 18 points and Notre Dame beat Hartford.
Jerian Grant shook off a minor leg injury in the first half to finish with 15 points in Notre Dame’s final nonconference game of the season. Pat Connaughton added 16 points and Zach Auguste scored 13 of his 15 in the second half for the Irish (13-1).
Already leading the nation in field goal shooting, the Irish hit on 53 percent from the field, knocked down 13 3-pointers, and led by as much as 30 in the second half.
Mark Nwakamma led Hartford (7-6) with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Yolonzo Moore II added 12 points.
No. 17 WEST VIRGINIA 82, VIRGINIA TECH 51
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Juwan Staten scored 18 points and Gary Browne added 12 as West Virginia routed Virginia Tech.
The victory gives the Mountaineers (12-1) their best record since 2009-10 when coach Bob Huggins’ Final Four team achieved the same record.
Staten made 6 of 12 field goals, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Browne went 4 of 6 from the floor and made both of his 3-point shots.
Adam Smith and Satchel Pierce led Tech (8-5) with 10 points each.
No. 19 NORTH CAROLINA 86, WILLIAM & MARY 64
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – J.P. Tokoto matched a season high with 19 points and added 10 rebounds, and North Carolina beat William & Mary.
Marcus Paige scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half and Nate Britt had 11 with two key 3-pointers down the stretch for the Tar Heels (10-3).
They never trailed and led by 25 but overcame a late rally by the Tribe (6-5) and a technical foul on coach Roy Williams to earn their fourth straight win.
Daniel Dixon scored a career-high 20 points and Marcus Thornton added 17 for William & Mary.
The Tribe closed within single digits only once in the second half, with Dixon’s 3-pointer from the corner made it 68-59 with 6 minutes left.
Paige followed with a three-point play, then hit two free throws on the next trip downcourt to push the lead to 14.
IOWA 71, No. 20 OHIO STATE 65
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Jarrod Uthoff and Aaron White each scored 18 points to lead Iowa past Ohio State in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
The Hawkeyes (10-4, 1-0) never trailed after the opening minute, leading by as many as 12 points in the first half and holding on when Ohio State (11-3, 0-1) applied pressure at the end.
Sam Thompson had 17 points, D’Angelo Russell scored 13 despite heavy foul trouble and Marc Loving added 10 for the Buckeyes, who had won eight games in a row in the series before the Hawkeyes won at Value City Arena last year 84-74. Three weeks later, the Buckeyes won in Iowa City 76-69.
Iowa holds a 75-72 edge in head-to-head meetings.
No. 22 BAYLOR 92, NORFOLK STATE 51
WACO, Texas (AP) – Royce O’Neale scored 15 points of his career-best 23 points in the opening minutes of the second half to lead Baylor to a win over Norfolk State.
Rico Gathers added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Baylor (11-1). Taurean Prince and Al Freeman scored 13 each.
Jeff Short had 23 points and D’Shon Taylor scored 11 for Norfolk State (9-6). Rashid Gaston had 10 rebounds and six points.
O’Neale had a 3 to open the second-half scoring, and then with Baylor holding a 40-29 lead, he took over. After a dunk by Gathers and one free throw by Johnathan Motley, O’Neale hit 3s on Baylor’s next four possessions. After Lester Medford converted a 3-point play, the Bears led 55-29 with 14:41 left in the game and the game was effectively over.
