LETTER: Warrant check program bullies the poor and the elderly

Dear Editor,

Warrant checks are fine, even a good idea, as long as it is done in an equitable way. By that I mean in all Ulster County buildings or in none.

The poor and the elderly are easy segments of the population to bully. I believe that having the warrant checks only in the Department of Social Services building is discriminatory and sending a biased message about the people who use this building.

The sheriff stated he would like to eventually install warrant checks in all Ulster County buildings. That would be fine as long as all the buildings were on line within a short timeframe. I doubt it will happen though. There is another segment or two of the population who wouldn’t stand for having to show identification at the door.
