RED OAKS MILL >> Nine students, the driver of their school bus driver and another driver were injured Wednesday morning when the bus was struck and overturned on Spackenkill Road in this town of Poughkeepsie hamlet, according to town police.

The three-vehicle collision happened about 7:50 a.m. at the intersection of Spackenkill and Cedar Valley roads, police said.

Police said a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country driven by a 41-year-old Rosendale woman was heading east and was stopped on Spackenkill Road waiting to make a left turn onto Cedar Valley Road, and the Wappingers Falls school district bus, driven by a 48-year-old Wappingers Falls woman, was westbound on Spackenkill at the same intersection.

A 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 21-year-old Poughkeepsie woman was eastbound on Spackenkill Road and is believed to have rear-ended the stopped Chrysler, police said. They said the Cavalier then crossed the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic and struck the bus.

The bus driver then lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, landing on its driver side, police said.

All nine students on the bus, the bus driver, and the driver of the Cavalier were taken by ambulance to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The Chrysler’s driver and four passengers were uninjured.

Police did not provide any of the drivers’, students’ or passengers’ names.

Spackenkill Road was closed near the accident scene for several hours while police investigated.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking witnesses to call them at (845) 485-3666.
