POUGHKEEPSIE >> The housing of overflow Dutchess County Jail inmates in other counties’ jails is coming to an end as the county transitions them to the new temporary housing “pods” set up on the grounds of the Poughkeepsie facility.

County Executive Marc Molinaro said the move is slow but, when completed, will be beneficial for the inmates and the county’s taxpayers.

“With that, we not only enhance the logistics of the criminal justice system, we think providing greater efficiency, but also provide for $1 million [per year] in taxpayer savings,” Molinaro said.

That amount is roughly what Dutchess pays other counties to accept its overflow inmates.

The mobile housing units are temporary. The state is requiring the county to construct a permanent addition to the jail in the next couple of years to resolve capacity problems that have existed for decades.
