New Shawangunk campground about to open for business

GARDINER, N.Y. >> The new Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground on state Route 299 is accepting reservations for the 2015 season, which begins May 15.

The American Alpine Club, in cooperation with Mohonk Preserve, is managing the tent-camping only campground. Campground amenities include a pavilion and cooking area, bathhouse and restroom facilities, and circulation trails. There are 24 drive-in spots – limited to one vehicle per site – and 26 walk-in spots. All sites accommodate up to two tents and four people per pad. Recreational vehicles are not permitted.

The fees per campsite (up to two tents and four people) are $24 per night for American Alpine Club or Mohonk Preserve members and $38 per night for non-members.

The campground was created in partnership by the Mohonk Preserve, the American Alpine Club, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission.

Located at 953 Route 299 in Gardiner, near the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center, the campground is within walking distance of the Trapps and Near Trapps.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
