TOWN OF ULSTER >> Two employees of the Staples store on Ulster Avenue were jailed for allegedly stealing customers’ credit card information and using it to make more than $30,000 in purchases, according to town police.
Shawn N. McMillian, 27, of Downs Street, Kingston, and Nerville M. Thomas, 27, of Schryver Court, Kingston, were arrested Wednesday and charged with two felony counts of grand larceny each, police said.
Police said they received a complaint from Staples, 1399 Ulster Ave., on Jan. 28 regarding the theft of customers’ credit card information by two employees. An investigation by detectives, with assistance from store personnel, found McMillian and Thomas, while working, stole account information from customers’ cards and used that information to purchase American Express gift cards in $200 increments, Ulster Police Chief Anthony Cruise said Thursday. Cruise said the gift cards then were used to make purchases elsewhere.
Police said additional charges against the two, as well as additional arrests, are pending.
People who have shopped at the Staples store in the past several month is encouraged to check their credit card statements to determine if their card was compromised, police said. Customers with suspicious charges are encouraged to call Ulster Detective Brian Reavy at the Ulster police (845) 382-1111.
McMillian and Thomas were arraigned in Ulster Town Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail – McMillian in lieu of $1,500 bail and Thomas in lieu of $1,000 bail.
