Spotify Partners with Sony to Launch Playstation-Based Music Service

Spotify will now be available to Playstation 3 and 4 owners, putting the leading streaming service in the homes of millions.

Spotify and Sony Network Entertainment International have partnered to launch PlayStation Music, allowing all 64 million PlayStation Network users to integrate their Spotify accounts, with their living room consoles. Users can now import their Spotify settings to Playstations 3 and 4 and Xperia smartphones and tablets. Spotify’s music (30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists, to be exact) will also be available for streaming during game-playing.

“We are incredibly honored to partner with Sony and PlayStation to give gamers around the world an amazing experience wherever they listen to music,” said Daniel Ek, founder and CEO of Spotify, in a statement. “As a gamer and PlayStation 4 user myself, I’m super excited to be able to soundtrack my FIFA 15 Arsenal matches later this spring.”

Sony Music Unlimited is currently available in 19 countries, across which Spotify is also available. When that service shutters, Spotify will pick up the baton under the Playstation Music name. As a consolation prize, subscribers will get a month of free access to Music Unlimited while getting the opportunity to try a Spotify Premium introductory trial from Feb. 28 through Mar. 29, 2015.

No word yet on how this will affect Music Unlimited’s partnership with Bandsintown, announced last June, which allowed users to preview songs by bands playing live in their area. When asked for additional comment, a representative from Spotify said the company would have more information about the actual service and full integration later this spring.
