S&P Global Ratings has lowered Israel's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'A+' from 'AA-' and kept its outlook negative on April 18th 2024, saying that the recent increase in confrontation with Iran heightens already elevated geopolitical risks for Israel. The agency noted that the Israel-Hamas war and the confrontation with Hezbollah appear set to continue throughout 2024, contrasting with its previous assumption of military activity not lasting more than six months. Despite not predicting a wider regional conflict as the primary scenario, S&P warned that such an event could significantly worsen Israel’s security situation, affecting its economy, fiscal health, and balance-of-payments metrics. The agency also added that should the conflict in the Middle East, by any chance, escalate, Israel's rating would further be cut. Moody's credit rating for Israel was last set at A2 with negative outlook. Fitch's credit rating for Israel was last reported at A+ with negative outlook. In general, a credit rating is used by sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and other investors to gauge the credit worthiness of Israel thus having a big impact on the country's borrowing costs. This page includes the government debt credit rating for Israel as reported by major credit rating agencies.
