Two British men have drowned off the coast of Malta, the Foreign Office has said.
Local police said the men, both 35, got into difficulties at around 3.30pm on Saturday while swimming in the Blue Lagoon in Comino.
An FCO spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Malta on 23 May. We are providing assistance to their families at this difficult time.”
Members of the Maltese armed forces attended the scene and one man was taken on a private boat to the nearby town of Mgarr while the other was airlifted to hospital.
The men have not yet been identified but the BBC reported that one was believed to be from Birmingham.
