Kenny Dalglish Jan 2011-May 2012

Dalglish’s brief return to management finished when his second spell in the Anfield dugout was brought to an abrupt end and in October 2013 he accepted Liverpool’s offer to become a non-executive director

Roy Hodgson July 2010-Jan 2011

Hodgson quickly found a job after he was sacked by Liverpool, joining West Bromwich Albion a month later. Did well enough there to earn the England post in time for Euro 2012. His national team contract runs out next summer

Rafael Benítez June 2004-June 2010

Gérard Houllier July 1998-May 2004

The Frenchman moved to Lyon in 2005 and won consecutive Ligue 1 titles before leaving in 2007. Aston Villa appointed him three years later but he departed at the end of the 2010‑11 season after finishing ninth

Joe Fagan July 1983-May 1985

Fagan was said to be haunted by the Heysel disaster in 1985 and he stepped away from the limelight after leaving Liverpool soon afterwards. Continued to visit Anfield and the training ground but never managed again. Died in 2001

Bob Paisley Aug 1974-July 1983

Paisley retired as a Liverpool legend in 1983 after spending 44 years at the club in various roles and offered informal advice to Dalglish when he became manager in 1985. Died at the age of 77 in 1996

Bill Shankly Dec 1959-July 1974
