The Secretary-General met today in Havana, Cuba, with Nicolas Maduro Moros, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The Secretary-General commended Venezuela for its support to the Colombian peace process, saying that the example of Colombia sent a great message to the region and the world. He also thanked Venezuela for its important international role as current member of the Security Council and of the Human Rights Council, as well as Chair of the Committee on Decolonization (C24).

The Secretary-General and President Maduro also discussed the political situation in Venezuela. The Secretary-General called for an inclusive dialogue between the Government and the opposition, stressing that the current socio-economic challenges faced by the country required unity of action from the political leaders and the people of Venezuela.

The two leaders agreed on the importance of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Secretary-General hoping for a speedy ratification by Venezuela. They also discussed the best way forward to resolve the border controversy between Venezuela and Guyana.

El Secretario General se reunió hoy en La Habana, Cuba, con Nicolás Maduro Moros, Presidente de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela.

El Secretario General elogió a Venezuela por su apoyo al proceso de paz en Colombia, y afirmó que el ejemplo Colombiano ha enviado un gran mensaje a la región y al mundo. El Secretario General también agradeció a Venezuela por el importante papel internacional que desarrolla como miembro actual del Consejo de Seguridad y el Consejo de Derechos Humanos, y por su rol como Presidente del Comité Especial de Descolonización (C24).

El Secretario General y el Presidente Maduro trataron igualmente la situación política en Venezuela. El Secretario General llamó a que se estableciera un dialogo inclusivo entre el Gobierno y la oposición, subrayando que los retos socio-económicos que el país encara requieren unidad de acción de parte del pueblo Venezolano y sus líderes políticos.

Los dos líderes se vieron de acuerdo con respecto a la importancia del Acuerdo de París sobre Cambio Climático. El Secretario General expresó su esperanza de ver una ratificación rápida del Acuerdo por Venezuela. También conversaron sobre la mejor manera de proceder en cuanto a la solución de la controversia limítrofe entre Venezuela y Guyana.
