Here's Everywhere Alton Brown Ate and Drank in San Francisco and Napa

That's good eats!

View as Map

If you didn't see Alton Brown's Edible Inevitable Tour when it came through SF last week, you definitely missed out. (Like, didn't get to see pizzas baked in three minutes in a gigantic Easy Bake oven levels of missed out.) However, the culinary scientist, Cutthroat Kitchen host, and all-around excellent human was kind enough not only to hang out with us, but to share his entire dining and drinking itinerary for both SF and Napa, which included plenty of coffee, Vietnamese food a-go-go, and of course, a little hooch. Here's the full accounting of everywhere AB ate, perfect for masterminding a daylong food crawl of your own.

The Eater staff met up with Brown at this newish Market Street coffee palace, where he enjoyed a coffee and told us all about his favorite donut in the world.

The ESF staff are also the parties responsible for sending Brown to Mid-Market's hip new food hall, where he enjoyed a crab roll from Fine & Rare before grabbing pho and Thai iced tea from Little Green Cyclo.

La Capra Coffee

Brown got his second caffeine fix at the FiDi coffee shop from the Rosenthal brothers, where he learned for the first time that "Gibraltar" is an alternate name for a cortado. (Blue Bottle started that one by naming it after the type of Libbey glass in which it's typically served.)

"For anybody on Earth who’s looking for the perfect gift to give me, this is the only place you need to look," says Brown of this specialty liquor store. He particularly likes bourbon, especially when paired with what he says is his favorite guilty-pleasure snack: Fritos dipped in the "caramel" sold next to apples at the supermarket.

Show Dogs

Brown rarely has a snack before performing, but since this sausage spot was right across the street from the tour's venue, the Golden Gate Theatre, he decided to indulge in a smoked Polish sausage with sauerkraut.

Smitten Ice Cream

While Brown didn't visit this Hayes Valley ice-cream shop, those seeking the next best thing to the 20-second fire-extinguisher ice-cream-freezing trick he performed during his show should check it out. Each batch is frozen individually with liquid nitrogen.

The Slanted Door

Brown told Eater that he always makes a pilgrimage here when he's in town, and this time, he ordered the gau goy chow (gulf shrimp and green garlic dumplings), cellophane noodles, spicy squid, and baby bok choy.

Brown admired the fortune-cookie corks at Fantesca, which include a Frank Sinatra quote: "Alcohol may be man's worst enemy, but the Bible says love your enemy."

School House Vineyard

Brown absolutely loved this small Napa vineyard. "It was everything that I'd want in a wine and a winery. Chardonnay is no longer a dirty word."
