MCD election: AAP's big dent into Delhi civic body BJP dominated for 10 yrs, Cong is close second

Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today made an impressive debut in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-election, winning five of 13 seats that had gone into bypolls earlier this month. The BJP, which dominated the civic body for nearly a decade, won three seats while the Congress had reasons to cheer as it won four seats.

Here are the things to know:

  1. According to the latest results, the BJP has won three seats - Wazirpur, Nawada and Shalimar Bagh.
  2. The Congress has not done badly, winning four seats till the results at 10:45 am: Munirka, Khichripur, Quamruddin Nagar and Jhilmil.
  3. The AAP, which rules Delhi, has also made an impressive debut, winning five seats: Matiala, Vikas Nagar, Nanakpura, Ballimaran and Tehkhand.
  4. One seat, Bhati, has gone to an independent candidate.
  5. The bypolls to the wards falling under three corporations - SDMC (7), NDMC (4) and EDMC (2)- were necessitated due to 13 councillors getting elected to the Delhi Assembly in 2013 and 2015.
  6. The 13 wards which went to the bypolls are Quamruddin Nagar, Shalimar Bagh (North), Ballimaran, Nawada, Vikas Nagar, Matiala, Nanakpura, Munirka, Bhati, Tehkhand, Khichripur, Jhilmil and Wazirpur.
  7. The MCD, which was trifurcated in 2012, has been a BJP-ruled body for nearly a decade.
  8. 45.9 per cent of the 6,68,870 eligible voters exercised their franchise in the high-stake bypolls for the wards falling under the three corporations.
  9. The elections are being billed as a litmus test for the popularity of the Arvind Kejriwal government, whose AAP won a landslide 67 of 70 seats in Delhi Assembly last year.
