Eagles not driven by offense

NFL

When the Philadelphia Eagles hired Chip Kelly as coach before the 2013 season, the big question was whether Kelly's innovative hurry-up offense could win games in the NFL. Almost two years later, the answer has proved to be an emphatic "yes." So now, everyone is asking whether Kelly's innovative hurry-up offense can win a championship in the NFL.

The Eagles are likely to get at least a shot at it for the second straight season. Our Football Outsiders playoff odds simulation has them going to the postseason 79.2 percent of the time. If they beat Dallas in Sunday night's big rematch, those odds become 95.4 percent.

But as unique as Kelly's offense is, that is not what will be carrying the Eagles into the postseason like it did a year ago. If the 2014 Eagles make the Super Bowl, they're going to be led there by the defense and special teams. And that's not simply an issue of Mark Sanchez replacing Nick Foles under center. The Eagles' offense just isn't performing like it did last season. And to try to cover that up, Kelly is driving the offense to move even faster than before.
