JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Spence Jackson, 44, media director for former Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich, was found dead inside of his Jefferson City apartment.
Police reported that Jackson’s death is being investigated as a suicide. There were no signs of forced entry or struggle, according to police.
Jefferson City police said that Jackson’s body was found in his bedroom. Police also added that a note was found at the scene but did not comment on the contents of the note. KTVI reported that sources said Jackson took a sick day Friday.
Jackson’s death comes just one month after Schweich took his life in his home in Clayton, Mo. He was 54 and left behind a wife and two children.
Jackson was Schweich’s media director since May of 2011.
Boone County will be performing the autopsy.
Former Missouri governor Matt Blunt issued a statement on Facebook Monday:
“Melanie and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Spence Jackson who was a good friend for many years. Spence was a gifted communicator who dedicated his talents in public affairs to public service. Over his career he served as chief spokesman for three of Missouri’s statewide offices including that of the governor when I held that post. Spence was hard-working, well-liked and quick-witted. He will truly be missed. We mourn his passing and offer our prayers to his family and friends.”
