Transgenders sent to beggars' colony by cops

In a major crackdown on transgenders who resort to begging in the city, police arrested more than 200 transgenders on various charges and sent them to the beggars’ colony on Magadi Road. The operation against transsexual beggars at various city junctions in different police station limits across Bengaluru has been taken up since Monday.

Terming the crackdown as illegal, brutal and unconstitutional, close to 2,000 transgenders have decided to hold a massive protest in front of Town Hall between 4 pm and 6 pm on Wednesday.

Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, transgender activist Akkai Padmashali said, “We were informed that the police have been arresting their community members since Monday.

What is shocking is that police are even barging into the houses and taking away transgenders, which is completely unconstitutional and atrocious. Officials at Beggars Colony did not even let us in and threatened that even we will also be locked inside the rehabilitation centre. We have been exploring legal options against such actions of the city police.” Akkai revealed that they are taking up the issue with the City Police Commissioner MN Reddi on Wednesday.
