2015 OGP Steering Committee Rotation Process

Jack Mahoney|

In 2015, the governments on the Open Government Partnership Steering Committee will rotate for the second time since OGP was launched in September 2011.  As the number of countries participating in OGP has grown – from the founding 8 to 65 today – it has become increasingly important to offer leadership opportunities to a wider group of governments.  New members of the Steering Committee will bring fresh perspective to discussions, and allow OGP to deepen engagement in new parts of the world. In 2014 eight governments were elected to join the OGP Steering Committee in a special election, and three governments joined for the first time. The 2015 election will be the first regular rotation of the Steering Committee, in which three governments will be elected for three-year terms.

Five governments have sent a letter to the OGP Support Unit announcing their intention to stand in the election.  These letters have been posted to the OGP website here.  More information about the timeline and process can also be found at the OGP website on that page.  The five countries running are Chile, Indonesia, Romania, Sierra Leone and Tunisia.  The top three countries will be elected to join the Steering Committee. All 65 participating OGP governments will be sent voting materials on July 1 and will have until July 30th at 11:59pm PDT to cast their ballot online through a secure voting process.  The new governments will rotate onto the Steering Committee officially in September 2015 and will participate in their first meeting in October 2015.
