  1. Post update

Right then, that's the Premier League done and dusted for another weekend so I recommend you hop on over to our League Cup final coverage as Chelsea and Tottenham slug it out.

    Cheerio.

  2. Sticky situation for Toffees?

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Are Everton in a relegation battle? Roberto Martinez's side have won just one of their last 11 Premier League matches (W1 D4 L6) and while they are six points above the relegation zone, that gap could soon get smaller if they don't start picking up wins soon...

  3. Player reaction

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Arsenal forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, speaking to BT Sport: "We knew we had to bounce back, we knew Everton would come at us as they tend to do.

"We had to be careful of them hitting us on the break, especially after Wednesday night's lesson. Going into the break 1-0 up was a big boost for us and we were able to control things more in the second half."

  4. Player reaction

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, speaking to BT Sport: "Arsene Wenger gave me the possibility to bounce back. We wanted to do that together and I think we did well this afternoon. We started on the front foot and pressed them high.

"We will take things step-by-step. We just want to focus on our games, we just need to keep doing what we are doing."

  5. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, speaking about Olivier Giroud: "I defended Olivier Giroud because nobody misses chances on purpose. Everyone misses chances and even if strikers don't score if you finish 0-0 it is still a good result. He deserved his goal today."

  6. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, speaking to BBC Sport: "We were focused, it was a mentally determined performance. You could see we suffered on Wednesday night against Monaco and that was still in our mind but we were patient, that got us a good chance and we got a good win today.

"We were a bit cautious. We just wanted to do our job and win. I am very happy with the mental aspect of our response. With the ball we could do better but the win was the focus today. We just needed the win because the result was very significant for the rest of the season.

"It is tight at the top of the table. It is down to consistency."

  7. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Everton boss Roberto Martinez, speaking to BBC Sport: "We didn't deserve the scoreline that is for sure. I thought we did many good things. It was disappointing to concede from a dead-ball situation, that is the last thing you want to do when you come to places like this but in the second half we were terrific. We created very good chances, pushed Arsenal back, but unfortunately they got a deflected goal. It has been a reflection of our season really.

"It will take a bit of momentum in terms of results. If you get two or three wins everything changes. We have not had any momentum this season and that is reflected in the points tally but all we can do is get ready for the next game, try to discover that momentum and finish the season as strongly as we can."

  9. Never too late...

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

    Arsenal

With all the brouhaha about Arsenal's defeat by Monaco, it is easy to forget just how brilliant their league form has been recently.

Late title push on the cards?

  10. Championship full-time

    Norwich 2-0 Ipswich

It is also all over in today's Championship game as goals from Bradley Johnson and Lewis Grabban secure Norwich a league double over local rivals Ipswich.

City move up to third in the table with the win.

  11. Premier League table

    As it stands

    Premier League

Not a vintage display by Arsenal, but one that goes some way to making up for their limp display against Monaco in midweek. Importantly, it keeps them firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish as they move up to third with 51 points, three clear of fifth-place Liverpool.

  12. FULL-TIME

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

    Jonathan Pearce

BBC Match of the Day commentator at Emirates Stadium

"Arsenal were made to work extremely hard for this win and Everton will feel hard done by that they did not come out of the game with a point. Arsenal get the win and keep the pressure on for a top-four finish."

  13. Post update

  15. Post update

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Everton look out of fight with Arsenal storming forward for a third. Santi Cazorla tries to wriggle his way though the defence to get a shot off, but his run is blocked, before Tim Howard bats away Tomas Rosicky's drive.

  16. Post update

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Hope for Everton? There will be SEVEN minutes of stoppage time, most of those as a result of Francis Coquelin's injuries.

  17. Post update

    Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Francois Coquelin goes off with a bloody nose

Moments before that game Francis Coquelin, who has been in a right old battle today, had to go off with a bloodied nose, with Calum Chambers replacing him.

  18. GOAL

Arsenal 2-0 Everton - Tomas Rosicky

    Tomas Rosicky celebrates

Surely there is no way back now for Everton as Tomas Rosicky scores Arsenal's second. For the first time, Mesut Ozil is left alone on the left and he sweeps the ball to Rosicky on the edge of the area and his low drive deflects off the unfortunate Phil Jagielka and into the net.

  19. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Danny Welbeck has four minutes plus injury time to find a second for Arsenal as the striker is sent on by Arsene Wenger for Alexis Sanchez.

  21. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Arsenal have everyone back except for Olivier Giroud as Everton try to force an opening. The Gunners look quite happy to let them have the ball, though, as Everton stroke the ball from right to left, before Luke Garbutt fires in a cross that David Ospina punches clear.

  22. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Third and final change for Everton as midfielder Darron Gibson comes on for Gareth Barry.

  23. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Arsenal fans want Theo Walcott on the pitch but the forward stays on the bench for now as Tomas Rosicky comes on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Eight minutes to go.

  24. CLOSE!

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Arsenal, though, have a glorious chance for a second that would surely kill the game off as they win possession inside the Everton half and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain runs towards the area with Mesut Ozil in support. Oxlade-Chamberlain slides a pass to the German, who takes too long to shoot and Phil Jagielka is across to deflect the shot over.

  25. YELLOW CARD

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

A shockingly poor pass by Gabriel Paulista gifts possession to Aaron Lennon midway inside the Arsenal area and Laurent Koscielny goes in heavy to prevent the winger racing through, picking up a yellow as a result. He won't be happy with his defensive partner for forcing him to commit the foul in the first place.

  26. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Still no changes for Arsenal as Everton make a second change of the game - Steven Naismith coming on for Muhamed Besic.

  27. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

    Everton striker Romalu Lukaku

This is a good away performance by Everton. They've posed an attacking threat and have also got things mostly right defensively with Arsenal's creative players rarely given a moment's rest.

Alexis Sanchez has the ball on the left, but immediately has two Everton players for company and he can't find a way through. Moments later, Ross Barkley shoots high over for the Toffees.

  29. CLOSE!

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

David Ospina is certainly earning his pay packet today as he denies Everton again. This time, Seamus Coleman gets the better of Kieran Gibbs on the right, cuts the ball back for Aaron Lennon, whose first-time shot is held by Ospina.

  30. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Francis Coquelin is made of tough stuff as he shakes off that knock and play is back under way.

  31. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

    Francois Coquelin lies injured

There's a break in play as Francis Coquelin is down receiving treatment after a nasty clash of heads with Olivier Giroud. With Everton pressing, losing Coquelin's defensive qualities at this point of the game would be a real blow for Arsenal.

  32. GREAT SAVE!

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Arsenal could certainly do with some magic from Santi Cazorla because Everton are definitely not out of this, only a fine save by David Ospina denying them an equaliser as the Gunners' keeper tips over Romelu Lukaku's fierce drive at the near post.

  33. Championship latest

Beautiful football from Arsenal as they threaten for the first time in this half. Santi Cazorla comes inside from the right, plays a one-two with Olivier Giroud before launching a shot just over.

  36. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

And on comes on-loan Tottenham man Aaron Lennon to the predictable sound of boos from Arsenal fans. He replaces Kevin Mirallas.

  37. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Ross Barkley is allowed to run at the Arsenal defence and gets to the edge of the area, where Gabriel Paulista makes the decision to stick in a boot and get the ball clear. Aaron Lennon is warming up for the away side.

  38. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

    Seamus Coleman tackles Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is having a great game both defensively and offensively and, after setting up Olivier Giroud, he is back in the Arsenal box to deflect away Seamus Coleman's attempted cross.

Everton are enjoying 55% of the possession, surely the pressure will tell eventually?

  39. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Arsenal soak up the pressure and finally get the chance to get forward themselves as Olivier Giroud is picked out by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain inside the area. The striker muscles off Phil Jagielka but the defender does enough to block the shot.

  40. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Everton's Luke Garbutt takes on Hector Bellerin

Arsenal are having to withstand some pressure as Everton win a couple of corners, swung in by Luke Garbutt. Arsenal head the latest one away but only as far as Muhamed Besic, who knocks a deep cross to Kevin Mirallas at the far post and he twice has a go at goal, but both shots are blocked.

In a carbon copy start to the first half, Ross Barkley quickly drives at the Arsenal defence, turns Hector Bellerin inside out but his cross is poor and Arsenal clear. The Toffees come forward again through Seamus Coleman, who is brought down by Olivier Giroud and the Arsenal goalscorer is shown the yellow card.

  46. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

    Gabriel Paulista

After almost gifting Everton the lead, Gabriel Paulista grew into the game and ended up making some key contributions, notably making a vital challenge on Romelu Lukaku while his one appearance in the Everton box almost resulted in Arsenal's second goal.

  47. HALF-TIME STATS

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

    Arsenal

It took Arsenal until the 27th minute to register a shot on target and their nervy start is highlighted by the fact that Everton dominated possession in the first half.

However, once Arsenal got the breakthrough they looked a much more confident side, finishing with a total seven attempts on goal, compared to just two for Everton.

Santi Cazorla rolls the ball inside on the edge of the area to open up space for himself before curling a shot that Tim Howard has to push over. The corner is then flicked on by Gabriel Paulista and Muhamed Besic's attempted clearance almost ends up in his own net, but Howard reacts quickly to hold the ball on the line.

  52. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Everton

Arsene Wenger pulled no punches in his programme notes in his assessment of the Gunners' display against Monaco, but he stood by Oliver Giroud and that decision has paid off.

The shackles are off after that goal and Arsenal are on the hunt for a second before the break.

  53. GOAL

Arsenal 1-0 Everton - Olivier Giroud

    Olivier Giroud celebrates

Just what Arsenal needed! They win another corner and make it count as Mesut Ozil fires the ball into the area and Olivier Giroud is there to steer a perfect finish into the far corner, prompting double fist pump from Arsene Wenger.

  54. League Cup final build-up

    Chelsea v Tottenham (16:00 GMT)

We've just seen footage of the Chelsea players arriving at Wembley for the League Cup final, including a mean and moody Diego Costa who has a pair of earphones plugged into his lugholes.

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

A ripple of applause acknowledges Arsenal's recent attacks as the hosts enjoy their best spell of the game. Everton have seven players back in the box as Arsenal come forward once again, attacking the right side of the Toffees defence as Alexis Sanchez tries to squeeze a shot through the crowd, but it is blocked. Hector Bellerin then gets into the area, but his low drive is blocked by Phil Jagielka.

  58. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

    Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez

  59. Championship latest

  60. CLOSE!

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Everton let Santi Cazorla go for one second and almost pay the price as he races into the Toffees' half, exchanging passes with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez on the left before the latter crosses for Olivier Giroud in the middle of the area, but his header is just wide. Better from the hosts.

  61. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Santi Cazorla has had a hand in six goals in his last five Premier League games and Everton are well aware of the threat he poses. As soon as he gets the ball he has three blue shirts around him and that is further hampering Arsenal's attacking threat which, at the moment, is largely nonexistent.

Oh dear, this is exactly what Arsene Wenger did not want to see - suicidal defending - and it is Gabriel Paulista who is guilty of it.

He fails to clear with Romelu Lukaku lurking and the big striker steals possession and races through on goal. Arsenal keeper David Ospina is quick off his line to paw the ball away and spare his team-mate's blushes.

    Alex Neil and Mick McCarthy

"It's the most important derby for 10 years," says Ipswich fan Carl Day.

"There's always something on this game, but this is a real biggie," says former Norwich defender Craig Fleming.

There's plenty riding on today's East Anglian derby at Carrow Road. Alex Neil's Norwich are the Championship's in-form team after recording five straight victories, and will move to within a point of an automatic promotion place with a win.

Mick McCarthy's Ipswich side have been inconsistent since the turn of the year, but are still in the automatic promotion race themselves.

  68. Rodgers raves about relentless Reds

    Liverpool 2-1 Man City

    Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to Sky Sports: "I have to take my hat off to players. To get back at half four in the early hours of Friday morning - by the time they got to bed it was six, and they had to sleep all of Friday. We then did some light work yesterday, but to come out and play like they did, they were relentless.

"They restricted a top team to just one shot on target and deserve all the praise they will get. The character of this team was questioned at the beginning of this season, but we were just trying to find a rhythm and balance to the team, with little time and lots of new players. It hasn't just happened; they have worked hard, and believed in how they were working."

  69. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earns Arsenal their first corner of the game. Santi Cazorla swings it in and Everton fail to clear before Alexis Sanchez picks up the ball on the left side of the area. He twists, turns and floats a cross out of play.

  70. Difference was two "beautiful" goals - Pellegrini

    Liverpool 2-1 Man City

    Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "It was a close game but Liverpool won because they scored two beautiful goals. But in the first half we lost too many balls, especially in the first 15 minutes. After that we equalised and then hit the post through Aguero. But in the second half we didn't arrive in their box so we tried to change our style of play.

"Playing two up front at Anfield was the best decision. It was a close game and they won the game when we had one striker on. I'm concerned that we are losing the ball too much - pressure is a factor. There is much we must analyse to improve.

On falling five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea: "It is three points less with one game less. Of course it is difficult to reach the top of table if you lose three points. But we must keep going and try to return to our normal performance and see where it takes us."

  72. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Before the Monaco defeat, Arsenal had won their last nine home games in all competitions but they are lacking the sort of swagger they should have with such a record. They look nervy and disjointed, how a goal would settle nerves on the pitch and in the stands.

  73. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Arsenal get forward for the first time as Hector Bellerin and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain combine on the right flank before the latter attempts to release Mesut Ozil, but the German had just strayed offside as the pass was made.

  74. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Arsenal certainly look like a side lacking a little in confidence as they are struggling to get the ball off Everton and string a few passes together in these early stages. The Toffees have another chance to test the Gunners' backline as Luke Garbutt swings in a free-kick from the right, but it is headed away.

  75. Post update

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

Gabriel controls the ball for Arsenal

Gabriel Paulista is the man to come in alongside Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the Arsenal defence, which is quickly tested as Ross Barkley surges forward, breaks into the Gunners' area but he is pushed wide and the chance is gone.

  76. KICK-OFF

    Arsenal 0-0 Everton

It is a gloriously sunny day in London, the kind of weather that appears to have ensured Gunners fans have arrived at Emirates Stadium in a forgiving mood. There are plenty of smiles on the faces of the home fans as Arsenal get things under way.

  77. To Emirates Stadium...

    Arsenal v Everton (14:05 GMT)

    Emirates

There's no time to take a breather as we move straight onto the next Premier League game - Arsenal v Everton.

Per Mertesacker pays the price for his part in what Arsene Wenger called "suicidal" defending in the midweek 3-1 defeat to Monaco as he drops to the bench.

Will Wenger get the response he is after? You'd have to fancy their chances of securing victory today, especially considering Everton's woeful record at the Gunners - the Toffees have won none of their last 20 away matches against Arsenal in all competitions.

Still, plenty of people expected Arsenal to brush aside Monaco on Wednesday, so anything could happen...

  78. As it stands

    Premier League table

    Premier League

If Chelsea's players needed any further encouragement as they arrive at Wembley, they've got it. Manchester City's defeat means they are five points behind the Blues in the race for the title.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, speaking to Sky Sports: "We showed great character to stay in the game and Philippe won it for us with a fantastic goal. We have to keep going now, every game is big. Burnley will be a tough game for us, but this result will give us great confidence."

On his goal: "It was just a break and Raheem found us. I took a touch and thought: 'Have a go.' Thankfully it went in."

  80. We deserved win - Lallana

    Liverpool 2-1 Man City

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana: "That's a massive win for us. We've got momentum, they're the champions and we deserved it. The little magician - Coutinho - at the end, came up with a wonderful goal. With players like that we'll go far.

"Our system has been causing problems for opponents, the manager said keep patient and find the space. We thought we were unlucky not to go in ahead at half-time. The lads showed character, many played extra time in midweek and had a long flight but we showed we can keep fighting."

Golden opportunity for Liverpool substitute Daniel Sturridge to seal it against his former club.... but no. The England striker drags his shot across the face of the City goal after Jordan Henderson dispossesses a sluggish Yaya Toure.

  89. YELLOW CARD

    Liverpool 2-1 Man City

City substitute Wilfried Bony goes into the book after a leaping into a high challenge with Adam Lallana. The Ivorian is all arms and elbows, like Lee Chapman back in the 1990s, and the home crowd are baying for blood. Referee Mark Clattenburg reckons a yellow card suffices.

    Philippe Coutinho scores Liverpool's second

Liverpool don't need a penetrative ball when they've got Philippe Coutinho! The brilliant Brazilian produces a rabbit out of the hat, lashing in an unstoppable drive from 25 yards. City keeper Joe Hart is left stranded.

  100. JP gets a soaking

    Arsenal v Everton (14:05 GMT)

    Arsenal

While the rain starts to fall on Merseyside, one man has already received a soaking in north London... It has not been the best start to the day for Match of the Day commentator Jonathan Pearce.

While speaking on MOTD2 Extra earlier he got a bit of a soaking from the Emirates sprinklers and, understandably, did not look best pleased.

It is never nice to laugh at another person's misfortune but, we have to admit, the video is pretty amusing. Even Arsenal fans still reeling from the midweek Champions League defeat by Monaco should be able to raise a smile...

Patient play from Manchester City as they stroke the ball around the Liverpool half, trying to pick a hole in the red blanket ahead of them. That passage comes to an abrupt end when Reds defender Alberto Moreno fouls Pablo Zabaleta on the right edge of the home penalty area...

If someone asked me to call this match then I'm afraid that I'd have to bottle it. Hard to predict.

Defender Per Mertesacker appears to pay the price for a poor performance in the Champions League defeat by Monaco as he is replaced by Gabriel Paulista in the Arsenal defence.

Mertesacker drops to the bench, as does Danny Welbeck, but Olivier Giroud, who missed several chances against Monaco, retains his place in the side. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain comes in for Welbeck.

John Stones, Ross Barkley and Muhamed Besic are recalled to the Everton team as Roberto Martinez makes three changes from the team that started against BSC Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Gabriel, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ozil, Sanchez, Giroud.

    Man City defender Aleksandar Kolarov

We have just seen the best and worst of Manchester City left-back Aleksandar Kolarov in a matter of seconds. The Serbian produces a beautiful flick to skin Lazar Markovic in the left channel of the Liverpool box, only to shank his cross high across the box. What a waste.

  109. Post update

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

BBC Radio Manchester summariser Fred Eyre at Anfield

"Liverpool had a golden chance to take the lead (see 52 mins) but they came unstuck because they're without a proper striker. An Ian Rush, anybody who is born to score goals, would put that away with absolutely no problem."

  110. SUBSTITUTION

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

First change of the afternoon - and it is City boss Manuel Pellegrini who blinks first. Goalscorer Edin Dzeko is the man hooked, with midfielder James Milner scampering on to the field in his place. That suggests a change of formation for the visitors, with their 4-4-2 turning into Aguero playing up top on his own. Milner occupies a position on the left.

  111. YELLOW CARD

  116. Post update

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

Liverpool enjoying an intense spell of possession in the City half. Blues skipper Vincent Kompany, who has looked shakier than usual in recent weeks, is well positioned again to break down another Liverpool attack. Much better from the Belgian.

  117. Post update

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

Back come Liverpool. Skipper Jordan Henderson drives the home side forward and looks to thread through to Philippe Coutinho. But City skipper Vincent Kompany is alert to brilliantly snuff out the danger with a well-timed slide challenge.

  119. KICK-OFF

    Neil Lennon

    Bolton manager on MOTD2 Extra

"It has been magnificent to watch, both teams have played their part. Manchester City look really dangerous, with Sergio Aguero giving a master class in being a striker, but Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana have caused the away side all sorts of problems. There are more goals to come."

  128. HALF-TIME

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

BBC Radio Manchester summariser Fred Eyre at Anfield

"It's been a great half, and 1-1 is a fair scoreline. In the first half hour City were unbalanced and Liverpool deserved their lead - Joe Allen kept picking balls out for Philippe Coutinho to carve the away side open - and we saw an excellent exhibition of football. David Silva then came off his perch on the left and out into the middle, he got hold of the ball a bit more and his contribution towards carving out a goal changed the game. It's been pulsating."

  129. HALF-TIME

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

    Man City midfielder Yaya Toure

In fact, the last action of the half sees City midfielder Yaya Toure give away possession when skulking around the edge of the Liverpool penalty area.

Referee Mark Clattenburg looks at his watch then gives a short shrill of his whistle. That's the break.

  130. INJURY TIME

    Liverpool 1-1 Man City

More uncertainty from the City defence as the electronic board shows there will be one minute of stoppage time. City keeper Joe Hart gathers a scuffed Raheem Sterling shot - but is furious that his England team-mate was allowed to wriggle into space there. And that should be about that.

Brisk start on Merseyside. Particularly from the visitors, with Sergio Aguero predictably instigating things. City's Argentine talisman fires wide after wriggling clear of the Liverpool defence, but the Reds would have been saved by the linesman's raised flag anyway.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man City

BBC Radio Manchester summariser Fred Eyre at Anfield

"I did expect to see Wilfried Bony start the game for Manchester City. You don't pay that sort of money for a player to just come off the bench every game. It's a big, big game, and he's a big player who cost a lot of money. I also expected James Milner to start. This is a perfect game for somebody like him, who is willing to work hard for the team."

  159. KICK-OFF

    Liverpool 0-0 Man City

The volume button on the music slides down. Referee Mark Clattenburg registers his whistle on the decibel meter for the first time - and Liverpool kick things off.

Second-placed City aiming to move within two points of leaders Chelsea. Champions League-chasing Liverpool could move level on points with fourth-placed Arsenal.

Anfield just would not be the same without Gerry and the Pacemakers classic 'You'll Never Walk Alone' blasting out. Best club anthem in football - fact. And I'm more of a Beatles man...

The travelling City fans try to drown out the Kop with a chorus of "Champione, champione". Sorry Blues, you've not got a chance.

Both sets of players are lined up in the narrow Anfield tunnel, waiting for the nod to stroll out. Manchester City keeper Joe Hart is particularly vocal, geeing up his team-mates both in English and another language which I can't decipher. He might just have been putting on a comedy accent.

  163. 'Rodgers deserves credit for defence'

Liverpool v Man City (12:00 GMT)

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

    Football Focus

"The goalkeeper now has a regular relationship with the three who normally play in defence and that makes a massive difference. Once you get that defensive solidity then you can start to tinker going forward, and Liverpool's tactics now allow them to play an extra attacking player, making up for the loss of Luis Suarez. Plus on the days when you are not quite right defensively, you can still win games with the extra attacking players.

"Brendan Rodgers deserves loads of credit. And whisper it, but lately nobody is mentioning Steven Gerrard anymore."

  164. Survival of the fittest?

Liverpool v Man City (12:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Both sides, as we know, have been involved in European action this week. But Manchester City have enjoyed the benefit of more preparation time than their rivals - and that should prove to be a decisive factor, reckons Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini.

City have not played since Tuesday, while Liverpool only returned from their Europa League game at Besiktas about 04.30 GMT on Friday.

"You can't prepare for the game," said Pellegrini, who had Europa League experience with Villarreal. "You finish on Thursday night and the players don't have the 48 hours to recover.

"It's an advantage for the other team, but we just can't think we are going to win for this reason. It is also about the performance."

    Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers ahead of kick-off: "It's a pressure game, but the team is best working under pressure. They have got top class players, we know we have to pay attention to that but our focus is more about imposing our style on the game and causing them problems."

  167. Sunday's gossip

Liverpool v Man City (12:00 GMT)

A few interesting bits of tittle tattle in Sunday's Gossip Column, directly involving both Liverpool and Manchester City. Time will tell whether there is much truth in them....

The most eye-catching - and, I'd suggest, most unlikely to happen - is that City are considering a £100m bid for Barcelona's former Reds striker Luis Suarez. (Mail on Sunday)

Meanwhile, the Reds are looking at offering out-of-favour City striker Stevan Jovetic the chance to stay in the Premier League, with the Montenegro international set to leave Etihad Stadium in the summer. (Sunday Mirror)

And James Milner has been told to lower his wage demands if he wants to clinch a summer move to Liverpool. (Sunday Express)

Jordan Henderson returns to captain the side, while Emre Can is restored to the Reds' three-man defence. Lazar Markovic replaces Jordon Ibe on the right flank while Philippe Coutinho comes back in to join Adam Lallana in supporting Raheem Sterling in attack.

Manchester City also make four changes with Aleksander Kolarov, Eliaquim Mangala, Fernandinho and Yaya Toure coming into the team in place of Gael Clichy, Martin Demichelis, Fernando and James Milner.

  171. Lawro's prediction

Liverpool v Man City (12:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson

"Liverpool can definitely get at Manchester City's defence with their fast attacking players - in the past we have been asking who the best partner is for Vincent Kompany at centre-back, but he is struggling for form right now and he has gone backwards.

"But City have found form again in attack with nine goals in their last two league games. They can hurt Liverpool too, which is why I think this game will end up as a draw."

Each week Lawro pits his wits against a different guest. His opponent this weekend? England rugby union star George Ford.

Let's continuing our analysis of the pre-match Anfield music for a second. Bear with this - it is relevant.

Kasabian's 'Stevie' is the next to blare out of the speakers - but of course Liverpool's 'Stevie' is nowhere to be seen on the pitch as the players go through their warm-up drills.

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard misses out again with a hamstring injury. But, as Kasabian sing, I'm sure he will 'live to fight another day' before jetting off to LA Galaxy...

A loud cheer goes up from the few thousand home fans already in their seats when the home side stroll out for a limber up. Reds forward Daniel Sturridge, who starts on the bench, looks chipper and breaks into a beaming smile as he warmly embraces City skipper Vincent Kompany.

Sturridge is a former City player of course....

  177. Post update

Liverpool v Man City (12:00 GMT)

    Guy Mowbray

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"After what happened at the end of their European games this week, what price a penalty proving decisive here?

"While Dejan Lovren's miss ended Liverpool's Europa League hopes, Joe Hart's save from Lionel Messi just about kept Man City alive in the Champions League. Just about.

"It also served as a major boost to City's spirits as they resume their chase of Chelsea - a chase that is back on after a two-point gain on the Premier League leaders last weekend."

  178. European hangover?

It wasn't a vintage week of continental action for English sides.

Manchester City kicked off a miserable week with a 2-1 home defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League, while today's opponents Liverpool were dumped out of the Europa League in a penalty shootout at Besiktas.

And Arsenal looked like embarrassing dads as they turned up at the Champions League disco only to be shown up on the dancefloor by Monaco. At least Everton provided some cheer by teaching a harsh lesson to Swiss side Young Boys.

  181. 'Sturridge too much of a risk'

Liverpool v Man City (12:00 GMT)

    Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers on his team selection: "Daniel Sturridge is still in a post-injury phase really, so we're having to be careful with him. He's getting his fitness back in his game, and after travelling back after Thursday I felt it was too much of a risk to play him. Inside the next week or so he will be ready to play more regularly.

"Jordan Henderson wasn't left out on Thursday, he had a problem with his ankle. He has been a big influence on the team, Philippe Coutinho had also played in a lot of games, and I felt it was time to give him a rest.

"But with both of those coming back in today we have an exciting team, the players at the front like Raheem Sterling, Coutinho and Adam Lallana, they have helped a lot in this great run we have had. Hopefully we can keep that going today."

So... many years ago I used to play for my local working men's club back in Doncaster and every year there was a jolly to Newcastle racecourse (followed by a 'few' beers throughout the day, of course).

There was one stipulation. You had to turn up for our Sunday League match on the following morning. No excuses.

However...myself and my best mate missed the bus back. Which meant we had to crash on a hotel floor. But, being skint students, we couldn't afford the train back to Doncaster on Sunday morning - instead deciding to stand on the side of a freezing A1 motorway to thumb a lift back.

After getting plenty of beeps and gestures from drivers whizzing past, a nice, middle-aged, middle-class chap called Charles stopped to help. Two hours later he dropped the pair of us, still in our race suits, back in Doncaster.

We raced to the council-run pitch, threw on some shinpads and boots and managed to come on for the last 10 minutes. To a hero's welcome from our team-mates.

OK, technically we did make the game - but we missed the majority of it. So we want to know the occasions you have missed a match. Tweet using #getinspired or text us on 81111.
