September is National Preparedness Month. To inspire area residents to prepare for a disaster, the Washington Public Library is hosting a “Prep-A-Thon” with programs focusing on emergency preparedness taking place throughout the month and appealing to different ages.
“Shake, Rattle, and Roll: The Day the River Ran Backward” will be presented by Steve Otto from the Missouri Humanities Council Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. This presentation discusses the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes.
Four earthquakes took place that winter. They are named after New Madrid, Mo., the epicenter of the last quake which leveled the town in a 7.0 seismic shake. These earthquakes remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the United States east of the Rocky Mountains to date.
Hear personal accounts of survivors whose lives were forever changed.
The next event will be Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. when the library shows a disaster movie in the meeting room. In this film, tornadoes ravage a town. While terrified residents seek shelter, professional storm-chasers run toward the danger. Call to the library at 636-390-1070 for the movie title.
A presentation by Jim Kramper, a warning coordination meterologist with the National Weather Service, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. In the event of a natural disaster, Mr. Kramper’s position requires him to work with emergency management groups and the media to disseminate information vital to the surrounding communities. Mr. Kramper’s presentation, “Building a Weather Ready Nation” will better educate the audience about disaster preparedness.
The final program in the library’s “Prep-A-Thon” will be “Fire Safety Day” Tuesday, Sept. 22. The Washington Fire Department will partner with the library to present several activities dedicated to fire prevention.
At 3:30 p.m., local firefighter Tom Dillon will join children for an afternoon story time, complete with songs, stories and crafts. A Washington fire truck will arrive on the Children’s Plaza for all to explore at 4 p.m.
Later that evening at 6:30 p.m., Washington Fire Chief Bill Halmich will give a presentation for adults entitled, “Fire Safety at Home.” The Chief will discuss the nature of fire, identify fire hazards in the home and give fire preparedness guidelines.
In addition to the planned events, the library is conducting a “Build-a-Kit Contest” to challenge patrons to gather their own stash of home disaster supplies. Those who participate will be entered into a drawing to win several “prepper” items. Details regarding this contest are available at the library.
