UPDATE:

CWLP released a statement Thursday saying the boil order in Springfield has been partially lifted for south end customers. The water department is going door to door with notices to all customers in the affected area, south of Stevenson Drive between 14th and 5th Streets to I-72, with an update on boil order status.

Those still affected by the boil order include customers in the following locations:

  • St. Francis Drive
  • Celeste Court
  • Straight Street
  • 3306 S. Sixth Street

All other customers outside of these areas may resume normal water use for drinking and cooking.

ORIGINAL:

About 100 CWLP customers are under a boil order after a water valve broke Tuesday morning. It applies to all property that is south of Stevenson Drive from 14th Street all the way down to 5th Street, and all the way over to I-72.

There are a lot of businesses over in that area. Crews had been working through the night Wednesday to fix the valve, which is now repaired.

When there's a water main or valve break water depressurizes leaving people at a higher risk of water contamination. So the boil order is in effect to make sure all CWLP customers are drinking clean water.

Officials from the utility say there are some possible causes for this break.

"Well the ground is very dry and some of the earth may be moving that could have caused that. Also, the velocities going through the water main are much faster and that's due to the amount of water people are using," said Ted Meckes, who is the water division manager at CWLP.

That boil order is expected to be lifted either Thursday or Friday, whenever the water is deemed safe to drink.
