Glasgow v Ulster as it happened

So it is Glasgow who await the winners of tomorrow's second semi-final between Muster and Ospreys in Ireland. There were a few walking wounded coming off the pitch at Scotstoun. They will be thankful for the extra day's rest come next Saturday's final in Belfast.

"Ulster were excellent, but they should have known that Glasgow are never done and Ulster didn't close it out."

Ulster will wonder how they lost that match. Glasgow looked all at sea for much of it until that late sucker punch thanks to DTH van der Merwe's try.

Ulster's desperate attempt to save the game ends deep in their own half as they lose possession in a breathtaking finish.

Stuart Hogg's kick screws wide of the far post and gives Ulster another chance and time to save the game.

Glasgow win a penalty as Ulster come into the side at a ruck and it is another chance for Stuart Hogg to be a home hero.

"Glasgow desperately needed a moment of brilliance to save themselves and Finn Russell has just provided two. His pass to van der Merwe took three defenders out the game, and his touchline conversion was top class."

Glasgow pinch a line-out at last, with Josh Strauss grabbing the ball desperately to retain possession.

Not content with that conversion, Finn Russell launches a superb kick to touch deep into the Ulster half.

A superb kick from Finn Russell whistles through the post from wide near the touchline and could signal defeat for Ulster if they cannot respond within the final three minutes.

Glasgow at last apply some pressure and are within five metres of the Ulster try line.

Ulster are looking comfortable and Glasgow are struggling with their handling - and maybe their nerves as we are into the final 10 minutes.

Ruan Pienaar launches a massive kick from 50 metres that just creeps over the bar to extend Ulster's lead. Great kick under pressure.

Ulster respond immediately and are deep in Glasgow's half of the field and, just as they look to be on the front foot, Ulster are given a penalty just inside the home side's half.

"The lineout has been malfunctioning for Glasgow all evening and it's a major reason why they have struggled to establish any sustained territory in the Ulster half."

Finn Russell makes no mistake with his kick and Warriors now have 20 minutes to turn the game around or Ulster are heading into the final.

Glasgow squander a chance with a line-out as Pat McArthur's throw is gathered by Ulster, but Glasgow win a penalty in front of the posts.

The ruling is that there was no obstruction, so the result is a scrum for Glasgow five metres out.

Glasgow's Niko Matawalu is impeded as he chases the ball down after kicking ahead on the wing. Ruan Pienaar touches down behind his own posts and we await the TMO's decision.

Ulster win a penalty as they wheel a scrum after putting pressure on the Glasgow pack.

Mike Cusack replaces Rossouw de Klerk, which means Glasgow have a completely different front-row.

Warriors are thankful for the swift backtracking by Niko Matawalu after a poor piece of mishandling by Leone Nakarawa leads to a punt long into the home half of the field.

The game is held up for a few injuries and a bit of a welcome rest for the players in a frantic and breathless second half with lots of miss-handling. The nerves are even affecting the world-class Ruan Pienaar, who kicks straight into touch.

Gordon Reid comes on to replace Ryan Grant, who is clutching his shoulder, at loosehead for Glasgow.

The BBC Sport Scotland text on 80295 is awash with complaints about Irish referee George Clancy always being biased against Scottish teams. However, BBC Scotland's Tom English thinks the official has just made honest mistakes.

Glasgow kick off with Ryan Wilson on at half time for Chris Fusaro, with Tommy Seymour is back after that injury.

"The only positive for Glasgow is they are only two points down and that could be significant. It is like a carbon copy of last weekend, the same try scorer, the same Ulster dominance and they haven't established a significant lead. Glasgow will take comfort from that, but they have to start playing."

Glasgow win a penalty to ease the pressure as the scrum collapses. Most of Scotstoun releases a sigh of relief.

Ulster win a scrummage just short of the Glasgow line after the visitors win a strike against the had in the Glasgow half and apply wave after wave of attack.

"Ulster have had the better of the first-half so far, just as they did at Scotstoun on Saturday. Glasgow came back to blow Ulster away in the second period in that match, but the visitors have many more experienced internationals in their ranks this evening, and they'll provide stiffer resistance to any pressure from the Warriors."

Glasgow at last begin to apply some pressure and they claim for obstruction after Niko Matawalu goes down as he tries to reach a high ball. Glasgow do win a penalty, kick for position and waste the opportunity with poor line-out ball.

"Glasgow are being bullied out of it and are playing second fiddle, but it is still only 8-6. It is the same as last week, when Ulster dominated for 50 minutes."

Ruan Pienaar misses the conversion attempt as his kick screws wide of the far post.

Tommy Seymour puts in a superb saving tackle on Tommy Bowe as the Ulster winger threatened to touch down in the corner.

What a kick that is. Wind assisted in truth, but there was never any danger that it was not going to fly high between the posts. Stuart Hogg puts Glasgow ahead for the first time.

Glasgow's Stuart Hogg is about try a monster of a penalty kick from his own half.

"Ulster are just winning the physical battle for me. They are a little bit more committed and the front two Ulster men are doing more damage than the front two Glasgow men at the minute."

Niko Matawalu is better known as a scrum-half, but he shows his prowess on the wing to intercept a dangerous Ulster move.

Glasgow hooker Dougie Hall is also retiring at the end of the season, with the likes of Sean Maitland, DTH van der Merwe and Niko Matawalu moving on to other clubs.

It's an emotional occasion for Glasgow captain Al Kellock, who makes his last appearance at Scotstoun before retiring at the end of the season. He'll be hoping his playing career doesn't end here this evening. He wants to bow out with another Pro12 final appearance - and preferably with a winners' medal in his back pocket.

Ulster number eight Roger Wilson is penalised this time for not rolling away and Finn Russell levels the scores.

By the way, Tommy Seymour started the game for Glasgow after all after that injury scare during the warm-up.

The visitors win a penalty within 40 seconds, after Rossouw de Klerk is penalised for not rolling away. Ruan Pienaar slots the easy kick between the posts.

Ulster kick off and are immediately outside the Glasgow 22-metre line.

There was a lot of noise when Ulster came on to the field. It is massive as Al Kellock leads out Glasgow.

Ulster take to the field at Scotstoun sporting their all white strip with red flashes. The atmosphere is building.

Glasgow have not lost in the Pro12 at Scotstoun since autumn 2013. That's the task awaiting Ulster tonight.

"Ruan Pienaar has probably done more damage to Glasgow than any other player in recent years. If Warriors can stop Pienaar, that is the key to beating Ulster."

"The players are in a very good place and we expect a very good performance from them.

"It is a different game from last week and a semi-final.

"It will be about whoever is on the top of their game and is playing their best right to the final whistle.

"There probably is an expectation from our supporters, but I'm sure Ulster will think they are favourites given their quality."

Before that news, the big talking point in the Warriors line-up was the absence of Scotland flanker Rob Harley from even the bench.

There are question marks about the participation of Glasgow winger Tommy Seymour as he appeared to signal a problem with his hip during the warm-up. We'll give you more on that in the lead up to the kick-off in around 15 minutes time.

Glasgow in the last four seasons have finished fourth, third, second and now first in the Pro12 table. So their supporters will be hoping that the natural progression is to now win the final.

Another big motivation for Ulster is that they will have home advantage in the final against either Munster or Ospreys, who play their semi-final on Sunday. The two winners will be facing one another at Kingspan Stadium, Belfast, on Saturday 30 May.

Glasgow are seeking their second final in a row after losing to Leinster last season. It was the first time the Scots had reached that stage.

Ulster finished fourth in the Pro12 table, but head coach Neil Doak will be hoping that his strategy of conserving his top players' energies will take them to their second final in three years. They were by Leinster two seasons ago.

Glasgow beat Ulster a week ago at the same Scotstoun venue to win the right to home advantage by finishing at the top of the Pro12 table. However, the visitors have made 11 changes by bringing their main players back into the side since that 32-10 defeat.
