This week Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) recognized just some of those who make the region a great place.

The 15th Annual Great Place Awards were presented at the monthly school board meeting on Tuesday. The awards are the highest recognition within HPEDSB and recognize outstanding contributions to support student achievement and well-being.

The committee reviewed 21 nominations and selected nine award recipients — comprised of 11 people due to two team nominations.

Over the past 15 years, including this year, 214 people have been honoured.

Julie Beatty, a parent volunteer at Tweed Elementary School, was one of those receiving a Great Place Award this year.

“Although Julie prefers to remain in the background, her presence is known every day,” said Director of education Mandy Savery-Whiteway. “She is actively involved at book fairs, the festive dinner, the knick knack sale and Breakfast Club.

“Julie can often be seen reading with individual students or leading a small group art activity.”

Tammy Kenzie, a teacher and head of the physical education department at Moira Secondary School, was given the award for her work with students in athletics.

“Perhaps Tammy’s greatest successes have been with students who have developmental delays,” said Savery-Whiteway. “Her classes are inclusive and welcoming for all.”

Rifaat Shekh-Yusef and Peter Tarle, volunteers at Bayside Public School, were recognized for the start up of the Technology Club at the school.

“They approached the school administrators last fall with an idea to introduce students to the technology world,” said Savery-Whiteway. “Noting the many job and entrepreneurship opportunities for individuals with coding skills, Rifaat and Peter partnered with the school to put a plan in place.

“Further evidence of their commitment to students is when one student moved away and they sent him a letter and an Arduino kit so he could continue to practice his skills.”

Other recipients were: Betty Beck, volunteer at Prince Charles Public School (Trenton);

Chris Lee, teacher at Centre Hastings Secondary School; Valerie Loney, teacher at Maynooth Public School; Brian Long teacher at Madoc Public School; Patti Marlin, educational assistant and Dan Walsh, teacher at Centre Hastings Secondary School; Dianne Winmill, teacher at North Hastings High School.
