VIQ: Humane societies in need of volunteers

Article content

Humane societies’ objectives are to promote ‘The Humane Care and Protection of All Animals and to Prevent Cruelty and Suffering’.
Spring is an extremely busy time at all humane societies as the number of animals requiring support increases. Are you an animal lover? Volunteers are the key to running a successful operation. As little as 15 minutes a week can make a huge difference.
How can you help? The following are a list of volunteer opportunities available at Quinte Humane Society and Loyalist Humane Society:
• Kennel attendant assists staff with the feeding, watering and cleaning of the animals in the shelter. This position involves cleaning litter boxes and cages.
• Cat cuddle volunteers assist in the socialization and care of shelter cats. This is the perfect opportunity to lend a hand. Socialized cats are less stressed, friendlier and more likely to be adopted.
• Dog walker volunteers have the opportunity to teach dogs how to walk on leash, socialize with people, and give them and opportunity for exercise and stimulation. This position is vital to a successful adoption program as these outings help to keep the dogs calm and well adjusted.
• Office volunteers assist staff with light clerical duties such as answering phones, signing in volunteers, and data entry. This position is a great way to gain office experience in a fast paced and exciting environment.
Summer is a busy time in the community with many short-term volunteer opportunities available. Changes by the Ministry of Education now allows students entering Grade 9 in the fall to start their volunteer hours in July.
