Ashley Filion and Nate St. Romain claimed top athletic laurels for the 2014-15 academic/athletc season as NCC put the wraps on its varsity sports year with the recent Crusaders post-season awards presentations. Together, Nicholson's dynamic duo played more than 10 varsity sports for the Crusaders this past season.

Also winning major awards at NCC were Teighlor Barrett, Liam Jarvis and Julie Murphy (teacher-coach) with prestigious OFSAA Colin Hood Leadership honours. Colin Hood awards are presented annually to one male, one female and one coach at Ontario schools who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the success of sports in their own school and association.

Filion played six varsity sports for the Crusaders at NCC — badminton, basketball, soccer, rugby, volleyball and tennis. She excelled in all, said Crusaders teacher-coach Justin Walsh.

“Ashley shouldn't be considered only a natural athlete, but a cerebral one,” said Walsh. “She's a smart player, always thinking, which was reflected in her classroom performance as well.

“She has an excellent skill set and athletic prowess.”

St. Romain was Crusaders MVP in soccer, cross-country and track at NCC. He also co-captained the senior boys rugby team, played basketball and scored a top-10 finish (fifth) at the OFSAA track and field championships in Toronto in the 800m event.

Walsh said St. Roman's level of competitiveness, “is off the charts.”

NEED TO KNOW: St. Romain is a two-time winner of the annual Nicholson Road Race.
