Break and enter at new fire hall

Someone broke into Belleville's new fire hall and damaged several areas with drywall mud over the weekend.

The new Station Street facility is under construction, right across from the Vial Rail station, and is expected to be completed sometime next month.

Belleville police have not released further information on the break and enter.

The investigation is continuing.

Structure fire

Although a structure fire on Geddes Street is not considered as suspicious, the cause remains under investigation.

Members of Belleville Fire Department responded to the minor basement-are fire around 6:55 p.m. Monday.

Fire Prevention Officer John Lake stated firefighters found smoke and flames in the floor joist area of the basement when they arrived on scene.

“Under the incident command of Capt. Brad Begbie, crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames,” he said.

The fire required extensive overhaul for complete extinguishment and to check for fire extension.

“But damage was minor enough that the home owners were able to remain in the home for the night,” he added.

Fraud

Belleville police is reminding citizens about an ongoing and prevalent antivirus software scam.

Persons claiming to be affiliated with Microsoft ask to gain access to someone computer to remove viruses and/or other software.

Once they remotely gain access, police stated fraudsters typically ask for credit card information or a money transfer.

“Often they will lock your computer or threaten to do so if you do not pay a monetary amount,” added police.

“Do not allow anyone to remotely gain access to your computer or provide personal information.”

Break and enter

QUINTE WEST — Sometime after 7 p.m. Sunday and prior to 8 a.m. Monday, someone smashed the front door to of a downtown business.

Quinte West OPP stated nothing appeared to be taken from the Front Street business.

Police noted the suspect(s) were caught on the business' video surveillance.
