Discovery of the Week: Mowbird

Often the theme of an evening when you head over to “a mate’s gig” is generally their dodgy band’s first ever performance. This usually involves someone spilling their beer on a pedal board, getting punched, or general shit going down.

However, just over a week ago my mate was promoting a small gig in Manchester, and I trust his music taste so I was quite looking forward to it. It’s these kind of gigs where I hope to discover a gem of a band, and that night I got lucky. The night is a mix of Manc and Welsh bands, with my personal favourite to take the stage being Wrexham quartet Mowbird.

Mowbird come on as four very unique individuals, with a sense of mature knowledge that they’re ready to blow your socks off. The band have been releasing music for over four years, but they sound fresh as a daisy to me – despite being slightly older than the teenage band that preceded them on the night. The band bring a variety of ultra lo-fi to heavier punk tunes as they rattle through song after song; it’s essential to check out these guys and gal live.

Mowbird create the superb slacker lo-fi sounds I usually only find trawling through small west coast US indie labels. Who knew somewhere so close to home could bring me the same happiness? If you have the time, I’d recommend going through their discography from ‘Lady Lion’ to ‘Brompton’. But, if you’re looking for a quick burst into Mowbird, their most recent track ‘Audrey, Are We Lost?’ is a great place to start. Two minutes of quick tempo bedroom pop with quiet distorted vocals and synths that could have been plucked from a Scooby Doo fairground ride should certainly do the trick in making you want to hear more.
