Carly's vice presidential candidacy is the shortest of all time: Fiorina's failed bid for a spot on the GOP ticket lasts just seven days

  • Former CEO was chosen as running mate to try and spark the campaign
  • But poll numbers revealed Fiorina did nothing to boost Cruz's support
  • She's now broke the record for running the shortest VP campaign
  • Thomas Eagleton boasts the second shortest attempt at becoming VP
  • He ran alongside Democrat George McGovern in 1972 for just 18 days
  • Richard Schweiker was Ronald Reagan's VP candidate for only 24 days

As Ted Cruz's race for the White House came to an end on Tuesday night, so did Carly Fiorina's bid to be Vice President.

She was chosen as the Texas Senator's running mate just seven days ago, in a bid to revitalize his faltering campaign.

But polls have revealed that adding the former Hewlett-Packard CEO to the ticket did nothing to boost Cruz's support.

Instead, her short-lived bid for a spot in the White House will be remembered for the candidate's blunders and a fall off the stage at a rally.

She has also entered the record books, having run the shortest vice presidential campaign in modern history.

Thomas Eagleton boasts the second shortest attempt at becoming VP. He ran alongside Democrat George McGovern in 1972 for just 18 days before he quit.

The Missouri Senator suffered from depression, resulting in several hospitalizations, which were kept secret from the public.

When they were revealed it humiliated the McGovern campaign and he was forced to drop out.

Third on the list, that was revealed by the Daily Kos, is Richard Schweiker. The Pennsylvania Senator is remembered as Ronald Reagan's first running mate in  1976. He lasted just 24 days.

In a situation similar to Cruz, Reagan was behind in the Republican race and needed to reinvigorate his campaign ahead of the convention - where he would face Gerald Ford.

According to the Washington Post, Reagan chose Schweiker even though they had not met.

Just 24 days later, Reagan lost to Ford at the first ballot by a very narrow margin and Bob Dole was announced as the Republican VP candidate.

However, following Reagan's successful run for the White House in 1980, he was appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Fiorina joined the Cruz campaign in a last-ditch effort to snatch the nomination from Trump.

But in the week that followed, the campaign became mired with blunders that damaged the GOP candidate and his running mate.

He was slammed for entering the debate on transgender people being able to choose which bathroom they use.

Cruz was also mocked for calling a basketball hoop a 'ring' during a campaign stop in Indiana - while trying to recreate a scene from iconic sports film the Hoosiers.

On Monday, their campaign also attracted media attention for all the wrong reasons when Fiorina fell off of a stage when introducing Cruz.

A Morning Consult survey released on Tuesday, hours before results of the Indiana primary came in, showed that 25 percent of registered GOP voters were more likely to vote Cruz, while another 24 percent are less likely to vote for the Texas senator – essentially making the announcement a wash.

Another 51 percent said adding Fiorina to the mix had no impact on their voting choice.

Meanwhile, the Morning Consult found that rival Donald Trump hit a new high, with 56 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents saying they would vote for The Donald if the general election were held today.

Last Wednesday, just hours after Trump gave his first major foreign policy address, Cruz stole The Donald's fire by parading Fiorina, who had been a campaign surrogate for weeks, onto the stage as his official VP pick.

'After a great deal of consideration and prayer, I have come to the conclusion that if I am nominated to be president of the United States that I will run on a ticket with my vice presidential nominee Carly Fiorina,' Cruz said.

The campaign debuted a new logo at that rally in Indianapolis, Indiana, while Fiorina also came onstage.

'Ted could not be more right in what he said: There is a lot at stake, and in fact, this is a fight, this is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our nation,' Fiorina told the crowd. 'I've had tough fights all my life. Tough fights don't worry me a bit.'

The Morning Consult numbers show, however, that the voters are a tough crowd.

There is a glimmer of good news in the numbers as Fiorina is viewed as slightly more likable since her favorability was tested back in February, when she dropped out of the presidential race.

Today 41 percent of Republican voters view the former Hewlett-Packard CEO favorably, while 36 percent view her unfavorably.

In February, both numbers stood at 36 percent.
