Rolling Stones rock star Mick Jagger, 72, is having his eighth child with American ballerina Melanie Hamrick, 29.

The pregnancy, confirmed by the musician's spokesman, was reported by British newspaper The Sun on Thursday.

The couple are said to have been in a relationship since 2014 and their first child is expected to arrive in January next year.

Hamrick, born in Williamsburg, Virginia, trained at the Eastern Virginia School for the Performing Arts before joining the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington D.C. for five years. She has been a member of the American Ballet Theatre's corps de ballet since 2004 and was previously engaged to Cuban classical dancer Jose Manuel Carreno.

Jagger has seven other children with four different women, including former actress Bianca Jagger and former model-actress Jerry Hall, who married media mogul Rupert Murdoch in March.

Jagger's eldest child is Karis Hunt Jagger, 45, from his relationship with former model-singer Marsha Hunt, and his youngest child is Lucas Jagger, 17, whom he had with Brazilian model and TV host Luciana Gimenez. He also has five grandchildren and recently became a great-grandfather.

The British newspaper Daily Mail reported that he had introduced Hamrick to his children earlier this year when she vacationed with him at his holiday home on a private Caribbean island.

The news of Jagger becoming a father again comes less than two months after his bandmate Ronnie Wood, 68, welcomed his fifth and sixth children - twin daughters Gracie Jane and Alice Rose with his wife Sally Humphreys, 38.

On stage, The Rolling Stones have been having a productive year as well. They went on a Latin American tour in February, which ended with their first concert in Cuba. They also made the Forbes list of highest paid celebrities this year, having earned an estimated US$66.5 million (S$89.3 million) in a year since last June.
