Labour MP Ruth Smeeth has said Jeremy Corbyn’s failure to intervene after she was verbally abused in front of him at the launch of a report into anti-Semitism in the party shows a ‘catastrophic failure of leadership’, she said.

Mr Corbyn, who is stubbornly refusing to step down as Labour leader despite dozens of resignations and calls for him to go, was also accused of comparing Israel with Isis in a speech on anti-Semitism.

‘Our Jewish friends are no more responsible for the actions of Israel or the Netanyahu government than our Muslim friends are for those of various self-styled Islamic states or organisations,’ he said.

He was roundly criticised for his comments, which left at least one Labour councillor ‘red with fury.’

‘For that alone, he should resign,’ wrote Sam Stopp, a councillor in Wembley.

A Jewish MP, Ruth Smeeth later walked out of the report ‘in tears’, according to attendees, following an accusation that she was ‘colluding with the media’.

An activist for the political organisation Momentum, a grassroots organisation supportive of Jeremy Corbyn, reportedly made the accusation to the anti-racism campaigner Ms Smeeth.

Ms Smeeth said in a statement that Jeremy Corbyn should ‘resign immediately and make way for someone with the backbone to confront racism and antisemitism in our party and in the country.’
