President Barack Obama urged Turkey and Russia to refocus their efforts on the common goal of combating terrorism, after Russian President Vladimir Putin traded barbs with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Obama took time out from climate talks in Paris Tuesday to meet with Erdogan to discuss the situation with Russia and the campaign against Islamic State, also known as ISIL. Putin gave Erdogan the cold shoulder on Monday following Russia’s decision to impose sanctions on Turkey for shooting down a Russian warplane on the Syrian border.
