Microsoft's Skype unveiled the first preview program for Translator, which will provide near-instant translations of conversations hosted by the calling service.

The Translator will support two languages in its initial preview form: English and Spanish. It combines speech recognition and automatic translation to allow two people speaking different languages to interact.

"This is just the beginning of a journey that will transform the way we communicate with people around the world," says Skype's Gurdeep Pall in a blog post published Monday.

The feature was showcased in an incredible video featuring students from elementary schools in Tacoma, Washington in the U.S. and Mexico City.

Microsoft says the Translator relies on machine learning, so the more people use it, the smarter the technology becomes. It's available to users of Windows 8.1 or the Windows 10 Technical Preview.
