EDITOR’S NOTE Happy Thanksgiving, Friends!

I’m very excited about the content you’re about to read in our November issue. For several reasons, actually. First off, I’m thankful to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for His shed blood on the cross. Because of that plan 2000 years ago, my husband experienced a miracle healing from a debilitating stroke that paralyzed his entire right side only week before last. We acknowledged Him in the emergency room, were embraced with prayer, and he was spared the long term effects. He was out of ICU and walking within days, and then in and out of inpatient rehab in only a day and a half. It took it’s toll on my ability to finish my tasks in a timely manner, but I’m a thankful woman today with a completely restored husband - and I highly recommend prayer. I invite you to reach out to me if you would like to learn more about this. The second reason I’m excited about this issue is the re-launch and rebrand of the 1st Annual Celebration of American Business with a new date of April 22nd, 2016. All who have purchased tickets got an additional ticket for the new date at no additional cost so they could bring someone with them, or they got a complete refund. We’re over the moon about this, and now that I’ve gone through this family emergency, am more grateful than ever that we had decided to change the date. Look for the new ad inside, and get excited that we’re sticking to our lower early bird pricing through the end of the year! (What a great Christmas present, right?)

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT Round Canopy Parachute Team (RCPT) Army Veteran Michael Rohey has been jumping out of planes for decades. Now he’s a certified jumpmaster on the Round Canopy Parachute Team on a patriotic mission to honor veterans of all wars. And they do it by performing at air shows all over the world. A reputation for safety and training, in June of 2014, the Round Canopy Parachute Team (RCPT) and RCPTUSA combined made over 1500 jumps without injury. That’s what you want at an airshow event! And with 350 members from 26 countries, they are known as the premier reenactment team for the D-Day commemoration events in France and the Netherlands. Michael’s proud of that, and he should be. It’s the training that’s so important. While most of the 80 U.S. members are prior service military with military training, the RCPT can train almost anyone to jump to U.S. Army standards in only a week from airfields all over the country. Most of the training is done at the Dunnellon Airport WWII X-35 Airfield in Dunnellon, Florida. They’re not a skydiving act or aerobatics team that takes year to train for, but they perform World War II style parachuting activities and ground memorial services to honor all Allied Paratroopers who fought and died to defeat evil in Europe. Even so, Rohey will be quick

8

to tell you, those guys didn’t have cleared spaces to jump in.

to save the world from despotism and restore peace.

WWII paratroopers were trained to jump in masses, that meant they had to have limited control of their chutes so they wouldn’t run into each other. They had to land in ground conditions that were unprepared for their arrival, and land so that the chutes would be in front of them because if they landed in front of their chute, it could get hung up in trees. Just try to imagine the environment those men jumped in. Everything about the jump, the disconnect from the static line to the descent to the rolling landing - all without the levels of intelligence we have today. They had no idea what they were jumping into, but did it valiantly

It’s what the board of the RCPT, including Michael Rohey, the event coordinator, live to share every day. Now those jumps are performed with chutes that can be directed. They still use round canopies (round parachutes) and from the ground watching them float through the air, you can imagine what the skies in Normandy must have looked like on D-Day over 70 years ago. Spectators love it, and it’s not unusual to attract 35,000 of them, families in tow, to air shows all over America. The RCPT jump from a low altitude so spectators can watch the paratroop-

ers go out the door, and they continue to interact closely with them once they’re back on the ground. They encourage conversations, and from the rookie jumpers to the veterans to the youth at the air shows where they entertain - America is better off for the shared experience. The RCPT is a 501c nonprofit, and they pay their way for each of these venues in Europe and the U.S. The fees they charge pay for operating costs and covering one of their core missions: taking WWII veterans back to Normandy, France. Insurance is a big chunk, and so is the aircraft. But without the visual this team offers audi-

ences all over the world, it’s too easy to forget all that’s been done to protect our freedom. The OffBeat Business Show & Magazine recognizes the contributions of American military veterans as a primary reason we can run our independent businesses successfully today. We share their stories, successes, needs and accolades four months of the year - May, July, September and November - and offer a Military Veteran Sponsorship Level that saves them 60% for exposure using our digital marketing platform during those months. We believe that our veterans deserve credit, honor, and lifetime provision for their sacrifices, and also believe that the only way that will happen is when American small business is made aware of and prioritizes their needs. This sponsorship level is available for veterans and patriots who wish to sponsor a veteran business owner or veteran nonprofit for increased exposure to the business to business market.

Find the entertaining conversation Susan Hamilton had with Michael Rohey on our replay page.

To book the RCPT for your air show, go to http://RCPTUSA.com, and remember - be generous. These men and women will give you all they’ve got, and our wish is that they would be fully compensated so that they can afford to continue this great work.

INNOVATIVE LANDSCAPES

AND POOLS Rachael Lea Designs N

ovember cover model, Rachael Wilson, is an intentional woman with a gift for innovative thinking. Marine Corp veteran and HCC Fellow, she’s taking a new approach to landscape and pool design to address some of the issues associated with our overuse of common chemicals. She’s learned that traditional chlorine and salt pools can be transformed into naturally filtered, environmentally sound and chemically free pools that are actually quite easy to sustain naturally. It’s a BIG idea, and she makes it no secret that her strength to launch into this new area comes from her fellow veterans and the training she’s received through Honor, Courage and Commitment (HCC). The business training offered to military veterans through HCC fellowship is grounded in good business sense, the idea that we have a responsibility to improve our environments, and support in every area through training, mentorship, and the connective nature of the veteran community. HCC Mission “To train and position military veterans into becoming successful entrepreneurs, business and community leaders. HCC maximizes veteran talent.” After 336 hours of training and mentorship, participants in the 22Fellows program offered by HCC are ready to take

Before

their ideas to the marketplace and hit the ground running.

Capitalizing On Her Strengths Rachael is no stranger to pool design. She grew up in the business. Her eyes get big when she talks about the things she’s learned over the years that make landscape and pool design more sustainable and less expensive - all the while eliminating exposure to toxic chemicals that retard our cell structure and leave us vulnerable to damage. In addition, these structures are no more difficult to maintain than traditional pools. Improving the aesthetics of the backyard experience above and beyond what’s been done before is Wilson’s heart. Some people grow weary of pools, and want to fill them in. She’s designing those areas as well. One of her many innovative design ideas turns pools into aerated ponds with fish that water garden spaces naturally, and return water back to the pond.

She’s also an instructor at Spirithorse International Therapeutic Riding Center, where she sees the benefits interacting with horses has on people of with special needs of all ages.

The primary focus of SpiritHorse is “to assist individuals with special needs in reaching their full potential through interaction with horses.” Sometimes you run across someone who inspires you to reach further than you ever have. Rachael reminds us through her example that we can impact positively in every area of our lives when we believe we can. O

ur company recently decided to add flat rate pricing to the way we calculate plumbing job estimates. For 50 years our company has charged based on time and material, and still believe it is the most honest method of realizing the actual cost, in favor of the customer.

Larger plumbing companies advertise flat rate pricing, however, and the consumer often appreciates that number because it is, in their eyes, quantifiable. We don’t use television advertising, so when they call, they expect us to be able to help them understand the scope of the job relative to what they’ve heard from those advertisements. They feel a flat number gives them an apples to apples price comparison, and I can see why they feel that way. That being said, it’s important to consider the whole job when considering a remodel of your kitchen or bathroom. There’s a reason we’ve estimated our jobs like that for so long. Many times a homeowner will be inspired to upgrade and hit the home improvement stores. New fixtures have a broad price range, and once a purchase is made, your plumber may help you understand why it was a good choice … or not. Cheap fixtures tend to have plastic, easily breakable parts and finishes that don’t withstand normal use very well.

12

Once they’re installed, ripping them out and replacing them after a short while is an additional expense.

On the other hand, pricey fixtures are not always reliable and some are overpriced. An experienced plumber knows the brands and styles that hold up because they service many of those brands every day. Here’s the bigger problem, however. If the overall budget isn’t considered, your resources could all be spent on the fixtures and limit the quality and quantity of labor costs necessary to do an excellent job. A great fixture installed incorrectly due to time constraints or unqualified labor could mean you have a mess on your hands that extends the life of the job, adds to the expense, and impedes your daily routine. No matter what your budget is, large or small, your best bet is to hire a reputable plumbing company (checked against the State Board of Plumbing Examiners website) and let them help you approach the job from a better perspective. They will know the sizes, specs and necessary elements needed for the job to go as you envision. In addition, they’ll recommend quality fixtures within your budget so you can afford the entire job done correctly. A referral from a neighbor, relative or friend tells you that they have used this company and are well satisfied

CONSIDER THE WHOLE JOB with the work done.

The price given per hour vs. the price given per job can make a huge difference. We believe it’s best to offer our customers both options, and explain the difference between a firm quote or charges based on actual time and materials used to complete the job. We have had customers tell us that they used ‘SO-and-So Plumbing’ and although they were quoted a price for the work, they were not informed of additional costs, like the service or trip charge, possible permit requirements, or other miscellaneous charges. So while you may like the price you hear it is wise to get it in writing and not count on total recall during the billing phase.

A Business Owner’s Family Law Nightmare And How YOU Can Be Prepared By Lisa Zahn

Hiring a family law attorney can be

a daunting task. With over 84,000 licensed attorneys in Texas, where do you start when you need counsel? Who do you call? What should you look for in your attorney? You must ask a lot of questions as you embark on this process. Especially when you are incredibly busy with your own business, it is imperative that you do take the time to choose the best and right attorney for your case. In a family law case, you will experience overwhelm - emotionally, mentally, and sometimes physically and financially. Now is not the time to choose the first attorney who comes up on a Google search.

Where to Start The best place to start is not by using Google. Start by asking trusted friends, family members, your CPA, financial advisor, therapist or colleagues who they recommend. Ask why a specific attorney has been recommended and what they like about him or her. After you have some names, then start Googling. Find out all you can about the attorneys whose names you have gathered. Look for attorneys board certified in family law. Consider how

long they’ve been practicing law, and the counties they work in. In Texas, check www.texasbar.com to see if an attorney has ever been subject to disciplinary action by the State Board, but every state will have this information available so do your due diligence and seek out that information.

First Contact Once you have whittled down your list to attorneys with credentials and experience (and no disciplinary history), pick three and start making calls. When you call an attorney’s office for the first time, are you put through to the attorney to have a brief telephone conversation? Are you asked to make an appointment without speaking to the attorney? That may be indicative of how accessible your attorney is likely to be during your case. You may, under the best of circumstances, be working closely or frequently with a legal assistant or legal secretary. Look for a courteous and professional staff that returns calls promptly. Are you willing to wait days for your attorney to return your call? You shouldn’t be. Expect a call back that same day, or at least within 24 hours. Do you have to make an appointment

rather than speaking with the attorney you’re calling? Once again, is that attorney going to be accessible to you? Consider the consulting fee. Most attorneys do not offer free consultations, but the first consultation shouldn’t be outrageously expensive. How do you feel when you do speak with the attorney - comfortable or uneasy? Pay attention to all of these cues to start identifying who you would want to represent you in court.

The Meeting In the initial meeting with your attorney, bring a list of all the questions you have about your legal matter. Does the attorney answer all of your questions? If the attorney doesn’t know the answer to one of your questions, she should offer to find out the answer and get back in touch with you. Does the attorney guarantee a certain outcome in your case? If so, choose a different attorney. In family law, like all litigation, there is no way to know what the judge in your case will rule. Likewise, it is impossible to know how the other party and his/her attorney will behave during the case. Their behavior will di-

13

Off BeatMagazine

rectly affect how your case develops. Therefore, no attorney should make a guarantee about how a case will turn out. $300.00 per hour and up is a customary legal fee for experienced family law attorneys in Dallas, Collin and Denton counties, but also find out what the attorney’s paralegal hourly charge is. That rate should fall between $100.00 to $150.00 per hour. A customary retainer range is anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000. Ask the attorney if she/he thinks the retainer will be enough to complete the case or not. If your case is complicated, the attorney may tell you that there is no way to know how much the total cost will be because the amount of work your attorney will perform depends upon the behavior of the opposing party and his/her attorney. More work means you will be paying more money in attorney’s fees. Don’t gloss over the attorney’s fee agreement. Look closely to verify that the attorney’s hourly rate and additional expenses are clearly stated. It should also clearly spell out what you may expect from your attorney during your case and what she/he expects from you. Are you given adequate time to read the fee agreement or are you asked to sign it immediately? You should always be given enough time to read the contract and ask questions if you have any.

Closely Held Businesses As a small business owner, does the attorney have experience handling a case with an asset like yours? If you are seeking a divorce, your attorney should be aware of how to facilitate the valuation of your business and know when to bring an expert in taxation, corporate issues and the like. Your spouse will probably be seeking at least 50% of the value of your company in the divorce, if not trying to take control of your business. Since Texas is a community property state, if your business was formed during marriage, it is considered community property and is divisible by the court. If

14

you started your business before marriage, it is considered separate property which means the court has no authority to award any portion of your business to your spouse. However, your spouse may still be entitled to some amount of money from your company. This is called a ‘reimbursement claim,’ something that can be complex and a family law attorney must understand and implement it well.

The Story Of Bob And Jean For example, after “Bob” was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp., he founded a printing company in 2002 and ran his business for two years until he met and married “Jane” in 2004. During their marriage, Jane joined Bob in working from time to time at the printing company but she was not paid for her work because she wanted to pitch in and help the business grow. In 2012, the printing business became more successful than ever and had its best year. That growth continued in 2013 and 2014 and each year, Bob held back $100,000.00 per year in the company’s bank account in case there were lean times again in the future. In early 2015, Jane found a boyfriend for herself on match.com and filed for divorce from Bob. Remember Jane “pitching in” to help the business grow? Now Jane is seeking reimbursement for her time spent working at the printing company without pay. She has a reimbursement claim for “time, toil and talent.” Jane is also seeking compensation from Bob for the $100,000.00 a year Bob held back in the company’s bank account in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Technically, Jane may be entitled to a portion of these funds even though the printing company is Bob’s separate property. Jane also wants a portion of Bob’s military retirement benefits. Bob is mentally and emotionally overwhelmed by running the business, taking care of their two children, the di-

vorce itself and the claims Jane is making on his printing company and retirement accounts. Even though Bob is stretched thin by everything going on in his life, it is imperative that he chooses his counsel carefully. He should seek out an attorney who is knowledgeable about the nature of reimbursement claims and is familiar with the various experts (forensic accountants) who routinely investigate reimbursement claims. Bob’s attorney should be aware of what advantages Bob may or may not have in court due to Jane’s infidelity. Military benefits are valued and divided somewhat differently than non-military benefits, so Bob’s attorney should be familiar with that fact or have the resources to find out what to do. His attorney should also be experienced in trial work as well as negotiation. In addition, Bob needs an attorney who best suits him and his personality. Just because someone has a law license does not mean her demeanor and approach will be appropriate for Bob. Bob’s case has several complex issues that will be drawn out for many months if not a year or more. It is important that he choose an attorney who not only has credentials and experience, but also someone he feels he can rely on and communicate with him in a manner that he can understand.

Final Thoughts As stated above, there are over 86,000 licensed attorneys in the State of Texas. Some of those are family law specialists. All of them are not necessarily the best attorney for you and your case. Family law cases such as divorce, custody battles and child support issues are charged with emotion and stress. You May Have Someone ‘Doing Your Taxes,’ But That Isn’t Enough.

Forecasts Aren’t Only For The Weather By Christi Rains

Last

month we talked about the need for an accountant during the business start-up phase and the importance of decision making. If, like all too many, you didn’t seek out that “trusted advisor” to ensure you got off on the right foot, then it is time now to seek help. It’s not just about your income taxes or your payroll, an accountant will guide you through sales taxes, monthly reports and forecasting, and more. The first (and most important) question you have to answer for yourself is what exactly you need your accountant to do. That answer has a couple of parts to it. First, we recommend that you hire two separate accountants. One will be responsible for your taxes and the other will handle the daily, weekly, and monthly issues; this allows them to act as a check for the other. Sec-

ond, how much do you want or need your accountant to do? Do you want them to handle the day-to-day Accounts Receivable/Payable, Payroll, Reporting, etc.? Once you have answered the different parts of this first question, the process becomes more like any other search for someone to do a job for you. It starts with trust and comfort; because this person will be helping and advising you on your business this becomes an even more important factor. Canvasing your friends and fellow businesspeople is the best place to start.

to.” You are the business owner, and you have to be the most informed person in the room. Finally, at the end of the day your comfort level with your accountant is the most important issue in hiring them. If you made the right choice, they will become far more to you than just a consultant; they will become your partner.

Once you have your list put together, it’s time to start paring it down. Reference checks will help narrow the list, but nothing beats a face-to-face interview. Like a lawyer says about the courtroom, “never ask a question that you don’t already know the answer

EVERY BODY DESERVES BODYWORK Every career is a journey. Along that journey, an individual gains knowledge and insight of details regarding their career path that others are not likely to have. My journey as professional bodyworker a.k.a. a licensed massage therapist has led me to believe that every person deserves some form of bodywork or touch therapy.

“It is a shame that not everyone has discovered the rhythmic dance of touch therapy that creates an undeniable harmony between the mind, the body, and the soul.” Before I trained as a massage therapist, I was aware of other touch modalities, or methods. I thought, however, that these sophisticated methods of touch therapy were for the very wealthy. As my journey progressed, I learned that it wasn’t only for those who were well off financially, but for everyone. Body work is a proactive health choice in addition to a healing therapy. It’s also an investment with substantial returns for individuals, family, friends and employers. The benefits of massage, touch therapy, or bodywork - whatever you might call the health treatment - provide positive results for many conditions or discomforts, acute or chronic, that ail us.

The Test

where you are uncomfortable.

For a moment, wherever you are, stop what you are doing and ask yourself, “how do I feel at this moment?” If you can, close your eyes, connect with your body from head to toe. How do you feel? If you are sitting, stand up, or if you are standing, take a few steps. If you are lying down, roll over. Notice anything? Do your feet hurt? Does your back ache? How about your shoulders are they tight? Do you have a headache, or dizziness? How about a sour stomach or an old injury that is still inflamed? Maybe you don’t feel good. Surprise, surprise! These various symptoms are our ‘inner physician’ (inner voice) attempting to get attention.

What does it mean when your feet or hands hurt? Simply put, your feet and your hands are a map of the body that indicate where your discomfort is.

We are not always aware that our body speaks to us. Our bodies provide us with information - either by a whisper or a loud roar - that we need help. When someone whispers it is heard very differently than words spoken loudly. What gets your attention is usually the loudly spoken word, even if you choose to ignore it. Think of your body as the voice that connects with the conscious mind. Client after client I ask, “How do you feel?” and the response is typically a surface response, “Okay!” But when I follow up with, “Is there any pain?” I still may get a “No,” so I get more precise, “How about … do your feet or hands hurt?” We start to make progress when you tell me, the touch specialist,

As an example, the arch of the foot relates to your spine/back - which may need attention. The big toe/thumb relates to your head/pituitary gland, and believe it or not, the base of your fingers relate to your eyes and ears. These are areas on the hands/feet known as reflex points. The misconception is that discomfort is where it hurts. But it’s amazing the significance of the relationship between body parts and reflex points. My mission is to educate and provide therapy to maintain the body at optimal performance. This enhances the body’s functional capabilities on a daily basis. Movement is key and bodywork is an essential tool to facilitate this aspect of life. [blockquote] “Life is in the blood and circulation is key to unlocking the pathway to better health and wellness - moving nutrients in and toxins out interdependently with all body systems.” Every ‘body’ needs bodywork. The improvements show up through increased productivity and stamina, and a clearer mind, body and spirit. Touch is the most

The body needs maintenance frequently, and as the owner of this magnificent vessel, treat it as a prized possession with tender loving care (TLC). Would you let your car go without an oil change or the proper gas in the tank? I would think not, since movement of the car requires proper maintenance. The body is much more important.

Haven’t You Suffered Enough? Menopause

From time to time, stop to re-evaluate how things are going. Regularly scheduled maintenance is great, so without delay, make time for self. There is nothing selfish about taking care of YOU. This is a service to yourself, as well as to others dependent upon you every day. I often note that without my health, there is no wealth. For me, I’m inspired to focus on activities geared towards optimal health and wellness. And high on that priority list is bodywork. There are many options available to choose from, and deciding what works best is an individual choice. Below are a few typical massages keeping in mind many different modalities exist.

• CranialSacral Therapy • Lymph Drainage Therapy • Aromatherapy • Deep Tissue Massage • Swedish Massage • Sports Massage

These are the most common therapies listed throughout the bodywork community but by far a tip of the iceberg when it comes to various types of bodywork available. For example, therapies are also available for infant massage, geriatric massage, pregnancy massage and so much more. The idea is get bodywork done on a regular basis, it is one of the best investments you will make.

INNOVATION IS NOT THAT HARD By John Carroll Innovation is something that is sorely

needed – in our businesses, in our communities and in our country. Yet despite its benefits, innovation is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve. In the business world, innovation is often described as “The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. Think of the GE slogan, “We Bring Good Things to Life.” However, I tend to favor Scott Berkun’s definition, “Innovation is significant positive change.”

What does significant mean? In this broader context, significant is a 30% or more improvement in something. So, you could argue that any time changes are made to anything that results in a 30% or more improvement, you’re innovating. To simplify further, innovation is not invention. Think of BASF … “We don’t make a lot of the products you buy. We make a lot of the products you buy better.” This makes innovation a little bit easier to tackle now, doesn’t it? This distinction is necessary because we often times think of innovation as ‘rocket science’ or something requiring a scientific breakthrough or major disruption to how we do things today. This is simply not the case. However, in order for innovation to occur, it does require a certain amount of creative thinking and a departure from the norm.

“You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.” Innovation is impossible without change.

Although innovation is not that hard, we tend to make it harder than it needs to be by resisting change. While innovation may not be that difficult, the implementation of those creative ideas can pose major challenges for innovators. To overcome those barriers to growth follow this recommended course of action.

How to Innovate … Start with your vision. Think outside the box when evaluating where you are today in relation to your vision. Set realistic goals to help you get there. Clearly identify the challenge. To realize the vision, what changes must occur and in what areas? Consider it from all angles -- people, products, processes, systems, etc. Seek input from all sources. Change comes from within and outside the four walls. So, involve everyone in the process who can offer creative input and solutions.

face and be fully implemented.

When to Innovate … Continuously. This does not mean spending every waking hour with your head in the clouds. Innovation tends to follow one of two distinct paths; it either necessitates doing the same things differently, or in many cases doing different things to bring about positive change and produce the desired results. If you are committed to continuous improvement and growth, then innovation should already be a part of your forward thinking and strategic planning.

Ask lots of questions. Why is it done this way? What alternatives have we considered? Are there better ways of doing it? And the $64 question … Should we be doing this? Don’t reinvent the wheel. Although innovation involves experimentation and risk, a 30% improvement is significant. So, start small, learn and adjust until you achieve success. Get uncomfortable. Discomfort motivates change, and change is necessary in order for those innovative ideas to sur-

ARE YOU ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

To Get The Right Answers ? By Monica Cornetti Have you ever thought about how you make decisions? Do you end up in “trouble” because your choices left the people around you asking, “What were you thinking?” The truth is, you probably weren’t thinking – you were just acting on an instinct or used some kind of mental shortcut to reach your decision.

Chances are you weren’t asking the right questions to get the right answer. Let me illustrate with a story about my son Nick, his grandfather, and the conversation I overheard one morning while Pap-Pap was making breakfast for Nick. Pap-Pap prepared a big bowl of oatmeal, his own favorite breakfast. “Do you like sugar?” Pap-Pap asked Nick. Nick nodded yes. “How about some butter, too?” Again Nick nodded yes. “Of course, you like milk?” “Sure,” Nick replied. But when Pap-Pap placed the steaming bowl of oatmeal with butter, sugar and milk before him, Nick refused to eat it. His Pap-Pap was frustrated. “But Nick when I asked you, didn’t you say you liked sugar, butter and milk?” “Yes,” replied Nick. And with huge brown eyes turned up to face his Pap with that

angelic look that only a three year old can master, he woefully added, “But Pap-Pap you didn’t ask me if I liked oatmeal.” Good-naturedly his Pap laughed, took away the scorned oatmeal, and said, “Well how about some pancakes.” Nick’s smile beamed as he nodded yes. As this story shows, the way you ask a question can greatly influence the answer you get.

The same is true for every decision you make, or problem you solve on a daily basis. If you frame your problem poorly you’re unlikely to make a smart choice. Here are some questions from my What Were You Thinking? Playbook that I call The Right Questions Run that will help you to ask the right questions to get the right answers that you need.

Right Questions Run

Write down your thoughts for each of the next three steps and the move you will make for each. Step 1: Ask – “What don’t I know?” This week, admit you don’t know something. Then become a learner. Start with the Internet, the bookstore, the library, or a friend – the answers to most of the world’s problems are there – you just need to be open to learning. Step 2: What am I pretending not to know? All possibilities open up when we stop deceiving ourselves. For example do you really not know how to save money, lose weight, have a more loving relationship? If you really don’t know – then go back up to Step 1 above and figure it out. If you do know, then after writing it down, continue to the next question. Step 3: Why don’t I do the things I know I should be doing? Life isn’t always about figuring out what to do. The real challenge can be simply doing the things we know we should be doing. What should you be doing that you’ve been pretending you don’t know how to do? What techniques and strategies are you using to help ensure that the way you are framing a problem doesn’t prevent you from solving it? Are you asking the right questions to get the

ROI RE-IMAGINED

The Secret Is The Follow-Through Ever wonder where all your investment dollars really go in your organization? Or, why you are not experiencing the kinds of returns you expected? Well, it all ties back to your follow-through, or lack thereof, when it comes to the way you “invest” in training, coaching, and motivational messages. You see, organizations shell out a lot of money to bring in topics and training centered around leadership, team building, personal responsibility, authenticity, creating more effective and efficient systems, diversity, employee engagement, or a myriad of other topics. There are massive budgets set aside to inspire their people, to generate greater excitement and energy, and to change or grow cultures. Yet, throughout my 20 years in Corporate, and even still now, I am baffled at the amount of money organizations will spend on these training programs, motivational speakers, and in-house and/or external coaches for themselves and their teams, yet, they won’t spend a dime on the accountability systems or follow-through to ensure full implementation and traction for sustainable success. I remember a long while back, when I was an account executive for Johnson Controls, when I experienced the difficulty in getting our clients to appropriately budget for the operating expenses that were required to maintain the beautiful new construction

24

that was approved through referendum or by the board.

able tasks are executed, and progress is being measured along the way.

Many times they would separate out these items on referendum tickets or board agendas, only to have the new construction approved and the operating budgets denied.

One time does not make for implementation (a misnomer often assumed by leadership in

As a result of this reality, one manager said, “it is amazing how people will spend millions for marble in the foyer, but won’t put money in the operating budgets, and expect to run this facility and maintain this beautiful building by putting crap into their mechanical systems.” I always found that statement to be so on point with how organizations make their “investments.” More times than not, the investment is short-sided. Companies typically bring in training, speakers and coaches on a Thursday and/or Friday afternoon. They spend a couple of days getting everyone fired up and working together, only to come back Monday and have status quo rear its ugly head. And the solution is so simple! All it takes is some thought and consideration to the back-end of what you are bringing to the table. Same is true with change management strategies. In order to create sustainable change, there has to be some sort of consistent, measurable, actionable accountability system in place. There needs to be someone on the leadership team driving the actual implementation, making sure the action-

corporate environments) — the audacity, really, that a one-time rollout and communication to the field equals implementation. No! Implementation is a process, one with checkpoints, failure points, and measurable outcomes. Implementation is a result of consistent discipline and intentional activities that result in a change of culture, beliefs, behavior, and/or results. Spending money for the sake of spending money because you have a budget for training and development, or have a vision for growing your teams is not to be taken lightly. You need a plan on how to make the best investment. What does the front-end look like, and then, what funding and accountability will be assigned to the back-end? When I work with clients now, I always ask them a series of questions around the change management, cultural shift(s), and/or explosive growth and desired results they wish to see as a result of their investment...

Off BeatMagazine

• What are the key outcomes or deliverables you are looking to achieve? • What is your expected ROI? • Who will be the key leader driving thisproject forward? • What is your budget for implemention? • What is your budget for ongoing execution and maintenance? • How will you hold the team and yourself accountable? • Who will be the key leader measuring progress and results, ultimately accountable to this process?

Now, this is a short-list of the conversation that needs to happen. But, a short-list, nonetheless, to help you the next time you are looking to make an “investment” in your people, in your organization. And it starts with asking yourself these questions. Because, remember … ROI is a return on investment, not a return on intention.

YOURWHY My late husband, Sully and I were professional figure skating coaches - we were also known to our students as Mr. & Mrs. K. One of our students, Roderic, 16 year old with the desire to be a skating champion had been working for months on a very difficult jump called the double axel. He was so close, but time after time he couldn’t quite land it.

About two weeks before his Sully’s death, every day would he’d say to me, “Honey I think today is the day he’s going to land that double axel.” The three of us wanted this jump more than anything! After Sully’s death I had tried to get Roderic to land his double axel with no success. There were so many times that I wondered, “Can I actually get him to land this jump now that Mr. K’s gone? Maybe I don’t even have what it takes.” I realized it was all up to me - I felt scared and all alone.

By Taylor Kay Stephens

One afternoon I was working with Roderic on this elusive double axel – seventeen attempts and still, no double axel. Roderic tearfully asked, “Mrs. K, why can’t I land it? I could feel his thoughts, “If Mr. K was still here, he could get me to land this jump.” All of a sudden I had my answer “Okay Roderic, go land this one for Mr. K!” He stood there a minute, sighed and skated away. Next he was skating backwards at full-speed – then he stepped forward and threw his right leg up in the air, into one more double axel just like he had, countless times before. Right before my eyes was the most beautiful, perfectly-landed double axel! As we both cried and hugged each other, I looked up again in silence; “Honey, you finally got your wish. Today is the day.” If you think that Roderic landed that double axel because of desire, hard work,

SUSANSAYS It’s About America

American business is part of my DNA. My history working with companies all over the nation - all sizes, several various structures, growing up in a family business - all have given me an understanding of our circumstance and a belief system that’s undeniable. I believe there are too many of us ready to take everything our lawmakers hand us with extra milk and sugar. I believe we’re being fed poison, too, and it’s infiltrating too many areas of our lives. Our food supply, health care, tax and criminal justice laws are meant to be crippling, friends, and politicians are so focused on their own agendas - it’s like we don’t exist, or for reasons only they can explain, should be imprisoned by red tape and debt at every turn. But I live to stir you UP!! Not in a negative way, but in a positive way - because we CAN make a difference, but it will take a vertical stance. It’s time to rise and firmly say, “No.” With a smile. American business is the backbone of this country, and small, family businesses of

9 employees or less count for 80% of us. That’s the majority. Forget the one percenters and the 99% for a moment. WE are 80% of American small business, and WE are cast aside by too many large corpor-ations who should be partnering with us, cast aside by lawmakers who have no idea what a typical day looks like to a business owner caring for children, disconnected teens, ailing elderly parents and possibly a veteran who could use some support. With all my heart, I hope you’re inspired through each article, show and social comment we put out, to decide to say “NO” to ANY and ALL legislation that carries a fine or penalty. For anyone. We have to, friends, it’s out of control. We’re so full of bureaucratic spider webs right now, how could we take on another thing until we know what we have already? We don’t need MORE, we need to take a hatchet to what we’ve already got. Consider joining the OffBeat Business Association (OBA) to help us collect specific data in this area, become a stronger voice and grow your brand. We have to stick up for our business lifestyle. That’s how we begin to build up our great nation - not tear it down - through

successful business practices and lucrative decision making by our small business sector. I promise to always bring you our very best, because this is my heart for you. My upcoming holidays are centered on my thankfulness for the birth of Jesus Christ, but I know many of you are celebrating for different reasons. My love for you, no matter what you believe, is sincere. Have a happy, memorable Thanksgiving holiday with your family! Our Merry Christmas edition will be on its way soon. ~ Susan
