Nick Kyrgios Loses His Racket (and His Mind) at the US Open
Nick Kyrgios didn’t blow up on the court, hug a ballboy or besmirch the name of his opponent’s girlfriend during his first-round loss on Tuesday night at the US Open, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t entertain.
The temperamental, trash-talking Australian – currently being threatened with a four-week suspension by the ATP after cameras caught him telling Stan Wawrinka, “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend” at last month’s Rogers Cup – was back to not giving a single, solitary fuck in his four-set loss to Andy Murray.
It all started with him complaining to the umpire about ushers at Arthur Ashe Stadium showing people to their seats in the middle of a game. “What the hell were they doing letting people in that game?” he said. “Middle of the game. Unreal. Such bullshit. Fucking bullshit.”
Then, he smashed a sweet trick shot between his legs. And then he took a nap between sets. Boy, did he take a nap. Just look at that hot napping action:
When he was awake, Kyrgios also let his racket slip out of his hand, complained about the lights messing up his serve, whiffed on a spike attempt, went for unnecessary shots during volleys and made John McEnroe lose his damn mind. The former world No. 1 called Kyrgios “a clown,” said his “shtick is getting old,” accused him of making boneheaded moves and urged his mentor, Lleyton Hewitt, to walk out on him.
So, yeah, just another day in the office for the Australian. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that when Kyrgios takes the court, people are gonna watch. How long until he melts down and removes his shoes mid-match, a la Richie Tenenbaum? Tune in to find out!
