Madeleine McCann: New leads spark Met formal inquiry

The Metropolitan Police say their review into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has now moved to an investigative stage.

Detectives say they have identified 38 "persons of interest", 12 British, the rest from a number of European countries.

The twelve British people were in Portugal at the time Madeleine went missing in 2007.

Madeleine was almost four when she went missing from her family's holiday flat in the Algarve.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who is leading the 37-strong police team conducting the review and the investigation, said there was no clear proof that Madeleine was dead.
