A pair of Grade 6 students at Clifton School led a Cool 2BeKind initiative called "Fill-A-Bucket Today."

The initiative, part of the Winnipeg Police Association's anti-bullying campaign, saw fellow students encouraged to fill invisible buckets with either compliments or good deeds for others.

"It was really fun because bucket-filling spreads around our whole school," Daniel Cabahug, 11, said at Thursday's launch of the third annual campaign. "And our Grade 6 class even had its own tea party that we used to give each other compliments ... Everyone got involved in the bucket-filling."

Rachel Hart, 11, liked the way it felt, even when complimenting others.

"This makes us feel very good about ourselves," she said.

The police union started the anti-bullying campaign two years ago. More than 6,000 students and staff at 20 Winnipeg schools have been involved. Each school gets a grant of about $500. Clifton School spent its grant on fill-a-bucket books.

"It's been very important," said union president Moe Sabourin. "The kids learn that being kind is the message that we're trying to get across.

"I think bullying can lead to worse things, especially in schools. Whether it's name-calling, which could lead to assaults, which could lead to alienation of certain students. When you look at it on a bigger scale, especially terrorists ... they target people who have been alienated by society.

"In the long run, (the program) will lead to better outcomes as far as interacting with other people in society."
