Welcome to the January issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executives. The theme this month is Giant Steps featuring Dr. Peggy Whitson, the Fist women to command the International Space Station. We had the honor of interviewing Dr. Whitson and she was gracious in giving us candid answers about her amazing career journey. Dr. Whitson and several other women represented in this month’s issue highlight key global issues and Giant Steps in progress. I, initially published a different “Message from the Editor” and have changed it today based on an amazing debate that happened in London Parliament. (click here to watch) America is a Verb that Represents Ideals that Spill Over its Borders. Today, January 18, 2016 on the anniversary of Martin Luther king’s birthday, Parliament quoted Martin Luther King over a dozen times, in the context of debating whether to allow Donald Trump, the leading republican candidate to enter the country. This discuss was made possible after a petition that circulated through the country garnered over 500k signatures. This debate, while grated may only be a symbolic gesture, represents the integrity and ideas granted to America, by other countries. Our representation as carriers of human rights and ideals, our representation as a country continually struggling to balance its ideals with the patience it requires to actually implement them is really what is under discussion. As American, we must be mindful of what we actually do represent, our acknowledgement that these concepts are a work in progress and while we don’t have them perfected by any means, we must lean in the direction of perfecting these ideals especially in light of contradictory challenges. America is a verb and it’s our greatest banner in international relations. Countries around the world have valid complaints on many of our actions, but an equal or greater amount trust that we will ultimately step up to be the embodiment of oru own ideals. I hope you enjoy this issue.

Can You Hear Your Own Voice?

Our Voices... Can you hear your own voice? Funny question, right? I would have answered yes to this question before I learned about transition. In hindsight I now understand how incorrect that response would have been.

Sometimes it is difficult to see the influences. For example, have you ever heard someone say, "I really love to do ____ , but I could never do that?” Could it be that societal expectations are telling us to tamp down those wishes – modulate our voice? The culture we live in effortlessly establishes a long list of 'standards' or 'norms' that together form a picture in our minds of what we should do or how things should work. A simple example of this is our standard work day. Our society has created a standard notion of the work day, 9 am – 5 pm. I don't have to tell readers that many jobs don't need to be conducted during those hours in order to be done effectively. Yet when we talk about most jobs we discuss them or our ability to perform them against this intractable standard.

VoiceCan you hear your own? What if the answer to that question is no? There are influences all around us that serve to amplify or suppress our voices. You may be aware of these influences - like the presence or absence of family members; societal expectations; demands on our time; and - very commonly - exhaustion. Now think about this concept of invisible standards with respect to your voice. What would happen to our voices if we explored them outside of standards? I remember being incredibly surprised by an interview I conducted for my book that offered me a glimpse into invisible standards. Marina had just celebrated her fifth anniversary as an entrepreneur. She was thrilled and proud of her achievement. And yet she said, "Being an entrepreneur was never in the cards." She was in her late forties and the parent of three children. "As sad it may seem, it was a barrier while my parents were alive, because I think they would have said, 'well, we sent you to engineering school, why aren’t you an engineer?' As soon as they died I was like 'oh, cool,' I can do what I want now. Not that I Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html


was conscious of doing what they wanted me to when they were alive. But suddenly it was like, 'oh whatever.'" Our culture’s influence on voice has been examined. Voice played a prominent role in Carol Gilligan’s and Lynn Michel Brown’s Meeting at the Crossroads (Harvard University Press, 1992) which featured groundbreaking findings on women and their relationships. The authors concluded that women derive great benefit from relationships but they come at a cost. “As girls become young women they dismiss their Page 40 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

experience and modulate their voices in favor of what they believe to be expected or acceptable to the relational environment within which they find themselves.” (Crossroads, pg 217) The women spoke of their connection to relationships but at the very same time the women described a ‘giving up of voice’ in order to maintain those relationships. I remember one incredible woman, Samantha, who participated in my research. It isn’t about what other people want me to do or think would be valuable for me. What I want for myself in enough.” Through a process of transition Samantha reconnected to her voice. She had heard it all along – transition gave her the courage to dignify what it said. Transition occurs when what holds value or meaning to us starts to shift. Voice plays a fundamental role in the process and in our ability to navigate transition successfully.

It Starts Here Throughout the 1950s, Cole continued to rack up successive hits, selling in millions throughout the world, including "Smile", "Pretend", "A Blossom Fell", and "If I May". His pop hits were collaborations with well-known arrangers and conductors of the day, including Nelson Riddle,[9] Gordon Jenkins, andRalph Carmichael. Riddle arranged several of Cole's 1950s albums, including his first 10-inch long-play album, his 1953 Nat King Cole Sings For Two In Love. In 1955, his single "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" reached #7 on the Billboard chart. Jenkins arranged Love Is the Thing, hitting No. 1 on the charts in April 1957 and remaining for eight weeks. In 1958, Cole went to Havana, Cuba, to record Cole Español, an album sung entirely in Spanish. The album was so popular in Latin America, as well as in the United States, that two others of the same variety followed: A Mis Amigos (sung in Spanish and Portuguese) in 1959 and More Cole Español in 1962. A Mis Amigos contains the Venezuelan hit "Ansiedad", whose lyrics Cole had learned while performing in Caracas in 1958. Cole learned songs in languages other than English by rote. After the change in musical tastes during the late 1950s, Cole's ballad singing did not sell well with younger listeners, despite a successful Page 49 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Along with his contemporaries Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Cole found that the pop singles chart had been almost entirely taken over by youth-oriented acts. In 1960, Nat's longtime collaborator Nelson Riddle left Capitol Records for Frank Sinatra's newly formed Reprise Recordslabel. Riddle and Cole recorded one final hit album, Wild Is Love, based on lyrics by Ray Rasch and Dotty Wayne. Cole later retooled the concept album into an Off-Broadway show, "I'm With You". Cole did manage to record some hit singles during the 1960s, including in 1961 "Let There Be Love" with George Shearing, the countryflavored hit "Ramblin' Rose" in August 1962, "Dear Lonely Hearts", "That Sunday, That Summer" and "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days Of Summer"[9] (his final top-ten hit, reaching No. 6 pop). Cole performed in many short films, sitcoms, and television shows and played W. C. Handy in the filmSt. Louis Blues (1958). Day 4 Today I faced one of my fears, rock climbing! In my youth I enjoyed climbing trees, riding my bike down steep hills and jumping off rocks into the beautiful Caribbean waters. Will’s death made life so very fragile. My youthful adventures became memories of a past life, one where dying was only for the old and sick. My heart started to beat rapidly as I realized this WAS NOT in the brochure, I did not train for this! I choked back tears and began hyperventilating as I tried to navigate the sharp rocks and not contemplate my impending death on the cliffs below. Everyone else seemed calm about this part. Did they not see the abyss beneath us? How sturdy are these gripping rocks really? Was this climb a mistake? The rocks were so sharp that we had to wear gloves to keep from cutting our hands. The frequent gusts of wind pushed me back at times. The weight of my pack shifted my center of gravity causing me to feel unsteady. At only 5’4” some of the taller rocks and wider openings proved to be far more difficult. My porter grabbed my hand and with great ease tossed me across to safety. With my teammates and guides encouragement I climbed across, up and under every obstacle on the path. That night I captured a beautiful sunset at camp. I sat on a rock and cried my heart out. Not because I had endured another day of trekking and climbing, but because I had chosen to do so. The sunset reminded me of all things past. As the days end, so do chapters in my life. My childhood was difficult but my mother did all she could to keep us safe, fed and happy. She was gone a lot; my siblings and I were latch-key kids. My college years were tough as I juggled my studies as a scholarship volleyball player at Bethune Cookman College. In the off season, I held part time jobs to supplement my living expenses and care for my ailing mother. I married and became a mother by the age of 20. time I graduated college, I had divorced my first husband and was a single mother with two young boys. I met William a few short months before graduation and so began a new chapter in my journey. Shortly after Will and I met, my mother succumbed to kidney failure. This was the first major blow of my life. My security blanket was gone. How could I ever get through another day knowing I would never see her again? Will was deployed overseas, my boys were 5 and 2 and our daughter was 5 months old. I was a young mother with no mother to turn to for advice. As the last of the sunlight disappeared behind the mountain, the cold took over. The air was thin, making my sobs even more difficult. Tia and Gladys, are 14 and 10. Tia bears such a striking resemblance to her father that it brings me both joy and longing. Gladys was only 3 when Will died. She is named after my mother. Being both mother and father to my children has been the toughest and, yet, most rewarding journey. Do they know why mom is doing this? Do they understand that I NEED to do this? Will they chase their dreams, face their fears and live a life worth remembering? At dinner we checked our blood pressure and oxygen levels. The concentration of oxygen at sea level is about 21% and the barometric pressure averages 760 mmHg. As altitude increases, the concentration remains the same but the number of oxygen molecules per breath is reduced. At 12,000’ the barometric pressure is only 483 mmHg, so there are roughly 40% fewer oxygen molecules per breath. During the ascent, I lost my appetite and digestion was difficult, a common occurrence. As I acclimatized, I was able to eat enough to keep my energy. Vern would serenade us with his harmonica by playing show tunes and other songs we recognized. Sometimes we would chime in with the lyrics; most times we only knew the chorus. Even laughing was difficult, but we continued to smile. The excitement made it difficult for any of us to sleep. Tonight we will begin to summit.

Day 6 Day 5 From the Karanga River we climbed about 5-6 hours to our camp at Kosovo (15,600’). This is high camp. Looking south, I viewed the desert plains as the pinnacles of Mowenzi Peak towered before me. Due to altitude and emotions, the reality of this journey set in. I took a moment to think about my kids. My children know my love of travel but they never quite understood some of my choices in destinations. They preferred Hawaii, Bahamas and Cancun over historical landmarks or physical challenges. My boys, Xavier and Xander are now 20 and 17. Two dashing young men with their entire lives ahead of them. My girls . Page 61 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

We began our summit attempt at midnight. I used the breathing techniques Vern has taught us to adjust to the altitude changing. We attempted 4,000’ to the summit. The air was thin and cold. At times, I felt so sleepy I just wanted to quit. Vern nicknamed me smiles because I spent most of the trek cracking jokes, but today was no laughing matter. Five days of trekking and climbing took a toll on my body. The lack of sufficient oxygen wore away at my resolve. The cold went straight to my bones. My guide, Matthew, kept a vigilant eye on me. He repeatedly offered to carry my pack, but I refused. I’m a Marine’s wife. Marines do not drop their packs. I will not drop my pack!

The concept of date and time were lost days ago. We climbed wearing headlamps until the predawn light is reflected off the African plains. As the sun rose, I was able to see where I was, who I was with, how far I had to go and far I had come. It was the most amazing sunrise I had ever witnessed in my life! The sun ascended through the clouds; not on the horizon or at a far distance, but literally THROUGH the clouds beside us. I felt as if I could walk on the clouds and touch it. On our way up we passed, other teams who had summited earlier in the day. Some were being carried down assisted by their guides. They looked ill, lethargic and corpse like. Somewhere around 7 am we reached Stella Point, 18, 885’. Our guides provided us with hot cocoa and coffee--did I mention how awesome these guys were? But we still had a ways to go to reach Uhuru peak, so we kept trekking. At this point, I saw the majestic glaciers I had read about and which put this mountain on my radar. I saw a documentary on Kilimanjaro's shrinking northern glaciers, thought to be 10,000 years old. The glacier is a small remnant of an ice cap that once crowned the summit of Kilimanjaro. Almost 85% of the ice cover disappeared from October 1912 to June 2011. It has been estimated that by 2020 these ancient glaciers will be gone. I had never seen a glacier before. The layers of colors; blue, green, teal, aqua, white. Glaciers preserve bits of atmosphere from thousands of years ago in these tiny air bubbles, or, deeper within the core, trapped within the ice itself. As I admired this glimpse into the past I found myself imagining what the world must have looked like. Were the skies bluer? Was the air cleaner? And then I thought about dinosaurs, but that was my psuedo-geek moment. It was another reminder of how very fragile life is.

Finally I was here, the summit. Uhuru peak! 19,341 ft. The team was overcome with emotions; tears of joy, pride of accomplishment, the pain of lost loved ones. Despite the thin cold air we hugged, cried and absorbed the moment by taking Page 62 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

photos and relishing in our accomplishment. As I looked around at my team, I could not help but realize that had it not been for the death of my husband I probably would not know these amazing people or their loved ones. I would not have heard stories of how they met. I would not know their sibling rivalries. I probably wouldn’t even be here. I carried a Marine Corps flag and a picture of Will with me . I thought back to that hot summer day in Jerusalem. In the Bible, the Dead Sea was a place of refuge for King David; a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. A stark contrast to where I am today. Richard Nixon once said “Only if you have been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.” Six years ago, I was in deepest valley and now I had brought myself to one of the highest points on earth. We could not stay long. We needed to begin our descent or else succumb to altitude sickness. It was a fast paced slide down the mountain. Our goal was to reach 13,000’ before dark. My knees and ankles took a beating. The last mile proved to be the most challenging. This was an 18 hour day and my body recognized it. I skipped dinner and slept until morning when we continued our descent. We reached the park entrance where it all began. Our porters were once again waiting for us with song and dance. Despite our tired bodies we joined in the dancing and fun. We were given gifts by the local women and treated to one more meal. I studied this incredible group of men (and 1 woman!) who shouldered most of the weight of our team. Every day they set up and took down our camp. They hauled all of our food and supplies up the mountain. They always greeted us with a warm smile and encouraged us when they saw defeat or pain in our eyes. They worked long hard hours and several of them do it just so that they can send their children to what Americans consider high school. Families are required to pay school tuition fees, books, uniforms and more. Approximately 28.2% of the population lived below the poverty line in 2012. knowledge that I can do anything I set my heart to. My body is far stronger and more resilient than I ever give it credit for. I say to my children, pursue your dreams, live with purpose and always strive for the summit.

Today you can watch this on your phone and humans are living in space full time. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the United States government agency responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a space station, or a habitable artificial satellite, in low Earth orbit. Its first component launched into orbit in 1998, and the ISS is now the largest artificial body in orbit and can often be seen with the naked eye from Earth.[7][8] The ISS consists of pressurised modules, external trusses, solar arrays, and other components. A number of other high-profile women have contributed to interest in space programs. In the early 2000s, Lori Garver initiated a project to increase the visibility and viability of commercial spaceflight with the "AstroMom" project. She aimed to fill an unused Soyuz seat bound for the International Space Station because "…creating a spacefaring civilization was one of the most important things we could do in our lifetime.”[2]

Peggy Whitson was the first woman to command the International Space Station. Peggy Annette Whitson (born February 9, 1960) is anAmerican biochemistry researcher, NASA astronaut, [1] and former NASA Chief Astronaut. Her first space mission was in 2002, with an extended stay aboard the International Space Station as a member of Expedition 5. Her second mission launched October 10, 2007, as the first female commander of the ISS with Expedition 16.[2]

With her two long-duration stays abroad the ISS, Whitson is NASA's most experienced female astronaut, with just over 376 days in space.[4] This also [3]

female mission commanders have been in orbit at the same time.[5][6][7] On December 18, 2007, during the fourth spacewalk of Expedition 16 to inspect the S4 starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ), the ground team in Mission Control informed Whitson that she had become the female astronaut with the most cumulative EVA time in NASAhistory, as well as the most EVAs, with her fifth EVA. Three hours and 37 minutes into the spacewalk, Whitson surpassed NASA astronaut Sunita Williams with a total time at that point of 29 hours and 18 minutes.[8][9] At the completion of Whitson's fifth EVA, the 100th in support of ISS assembly and maintenance, Whitson's cumulative EVA time became 32 hours, and 36 minutes, which placed her in 20th place for total EVA time.[9] Her sixth spacewalk, also during Expedition 16, brought her cumulative EVA time to 39 hours, 46 minutes, which ranked her 23rd for total EVA time as of November 2009. From 1989 to 1993, Whitson worked as a Research Biochemist in the Biomedical Operations and Research Branch at NASA-JSC. From 1991–1993, she served as Technical Monitor of the Biochemistry Research Laboratories in the Biomedical Operations and Research Branch. From 1991 through 1992, she was the Payload Element Developer for Bone Cell Research Experiment (E10) aboard SL-J (STS-47), and was a member of the US-USSR Joint Working Group in Space Medicine and Biology. In 1992, she was named the Project Scientist of the Shuttle-Mir Program (STS60, STS-63, STS-71, Mir 18, Mir 19), and served in this capacity until the conclusion of the Phase 1A Program in 1995. From 1993 through 1996, Whitson held the additional responsibilities of the Deputy Division Chief of the Medical Sciences Division at NASA-JSC. In April 1996, Whitson was selected as an astronaut candidate and started training in August 1996. Upon completing the two years of training and evaluation, she was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Operations Planning Branch, and served as the lead for the Crew Test Support Team

in Russia from 1998 to 1999. In June 2003, Whitson served as the commander of the NEEMO 5 mission aboard theAquarius underwater laboratory, living and working underwater for fourteen days.[11]From November 2003 to March 2005, she served as Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office. From March 2005 to November 2005, she served as Chief of the Station Operations Branch, Astronaut Office. Whitson trained as the backup ISS Commander for Expedition 14 from November 2005 through September 2006, and as the ISS Commander for Expedition 16, launched October 2007, on the Soyuz TMA-11. During Expedition 16 she surpassed Sunita Williams for woman with the most spacewalks.[1]

Whitson served as Chief of the Astronaut Office until July 2012 and, as such, was responsible for mission preparation activities of International Space Station crews and their support personnel.

SpaceFlight Experience Expedition 5 The Expedition 5 crew launched on June 5, 2002, aboard STS-111 and docked with the International Space Station on June 7, 2002. During her six-month stay aboard the Space Station, Whitson installed the Mobile Base System, the S1 truss segment, and the P1 truss segment using the space station remote manipulator system; performed a 4-hour and 25 minute spacewalk in a Russian Orlan space suit to install micrometeoroid shielding on the Zvezda Service Module; and activated and checked out the Microgravity Sciences Glovebox, a facility class payload rack. Whitson was named the first NASA Science Officer during her stay, and she conducted 21 investigations in human life sciences and microgravity sciences, as well as commercial payloads.[12] The Expedition 5 crew returned to Earth aboard STS113 on December 7, 2002. Expedition 16 Her second mission, Expedition 16, launched October 10, 2007, on Soyuz TMA-11.[13][14][15] Along with her Expedition 16 crew member Yuri Malenchenko and spaceflight participant Yi So-yeon, she returned to Earth in Soyuz TMA-11 on April 19, 2008. The re-entry was remarkable for the failure of the Soyuz propulsion module to separate properly, and the subsequent "ballistic reentry" which subjected the crew to forces about eight times that of gravity.[16] She spent 191 days, 19 hrs and 8 mins in space on this mission.[17]

Introduction She’s eight years old. Yesterday, she was a girl, outside laughing as she played jump rope with her girlfriends. Today is her wedding day. By nightfall, she will be a woman. The laughter has given sway to tears. Her parents, who agreed to the marriage, have little to offer by way of consolation. She feels all alone. She’s scared and has no safe person she can turn to for comfort. Imagine how she feels the morning after. This is not a unique situation. An estimated 15 million girls under age 18 are married each and every year. This translates to a child being married every two seconds. Of that number, one in seven is under 15, with a noteworthy number of child brides being a mere eight or nine years old. This is an endemic human rights issue. Only through support of educational programmes and of those institutions seeking to eradicate this tragic condition will there be global change benefiting everyone.

Etiology The etiology of child marriages is traceable to historical gender inequality, economic hardship and, more often than not, to antiquated religious beliefs. Take for instance the situation in Türkiye, where more than a third of all marriages involve underage girls. These marriages, despite being illegal, occur without recrimination in Türkiye’s highly patriarchal society. The marriage ceremonies are performed by an Iman and are never registered with the government. As such, the number is estimated to be even higher based on statistics derived from the high maternal mortality rates and from marriage being Page 84 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

cited as the primary reason for dropping out of the educational process. In India, in addition to no longer having to financially provide for their daughter, child marriage is incorrectly perceived of protecting their daughters from sexual or other abuse and premarital sex. The situation extends beyond tradition, with climate change also having an impact in drought-ridden countries such as Ethiopia. “Barren lands and food shortages are causing more poverty-stricken families who can’t afford to feed their children to marry off their daughters to wealthier men.” The other source of child marriages emanates from the radicalized terrorists who pillage villages taking young girls as plunder who are then married within the ‘cell’ or who are sold to others. The infant mortality rate is even more alarming, with babies born to mothers under 20 years old being 50 percent more likely to die within a few weeks after birth as compared to babies born to mothers in their 20s. 

Child brides and their children are more likely to develop HIV and other health related issues. According to the World Health Organization, child brides are more likely to be sexual abuse and domestic violence victims. This is in sync with UNICEF’s finding that one in three women and girls will experience violence in their lifetime. 

They are unlikely to seek help for domestic violence, as one half of all adolescent girls believe that a husband is justified in striking his wife in anger. 

Marriage almost always signifies the end of their formal education. Those girls attempting to continue their education face barriers including disapproval by their husbands and families, pressure to conceive, and an inability to pay school fees. 

These factors are stronger than the laws protecting against child marriages, assuming a country is a member state, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, The Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, the Protocol for the African Charter on Human, and the People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in African. Even if the county is member state, enforcement is a fallacy.

Risk Factors The risks associated with child marriages, especially for girls under the age of 15, are immense: 

Child brides or girls who otherwise become pregnant under the age of 15 are five times more likely to die during the birthing process than a woman in the 2024 year old age bracket.

The lack of education, perpetuates an endless cycle of poverty. Consider that if called upon to do so, these girls have no skills upon which they can support themselves or their children. Given that their husbands average 10 years older, and that women have a longer life expectancy, a child bride can reasonably be expected to be the breadwinner at some point during her lifetime. and care for their children, leading to healthier, smaller families. When girls

are allowed to be girls, everybody wins (Emphasis Added) .” As a result of educational programmes conducted by local and global organizations, such as UNICEF, and NGOs, there has been some isolated headway, most notably in Central America. What gains have been made are dwarfed by predictive statistical analysis.

Breaking the Cycle Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF's Regional Director for West and Central Africa, stated that minimally the “… cycle of poverty that could be broken by focusing on girls' rights and education.” This involves educating not only the girls but their communities. Education as to previously unconsidered benefits is necessary both prior to marriage and once a marriage is consummated. Girls receiving seven years of education marry, on the average, four years later, leading to lessened maternal and infant mortality rates. And, extending a girl's schooling by one year increases her wages by 18-20%. Education also benefits her family, as child born to a literate mother is 50% more likely to live past the age of five and four times more likely to receive life giving vaccinations. “Ending child marriage will help break the intergenerational cycle of poverty by allowing girls and women to participate more fully in society. In Africa alone, despite a 10% drop since 1990, a recent UNICEF study estimates that the total number of child brides will skyrocket from 125 million to 310 million by 2050. But, the problem extends beyond Africa with the highest rates of child marriages taking place in descending order in Southeast Asia, followed by Latin America, the Middle East, and the East Asia areas; statistics that are skewed given China’s failure to report its statistics to UNICEF.

What Engaging Is—and What It Is Not You may think you are engaging—you talk, you do things together, you listen intently to your partner, or you do your fair share of the chores. Or maybe you have frequent, loud and tumultuous fights. When we speak of engaging, however, we mean something more than activity or active listening or active fights. Engagement is not active listening. In fact, active listening is some of the worst relationship advice you’ll ever get. True engaging is being real, not careful. Being cautious with one another, using stilted “I messages” of active or reflective listening language such as, “I hear what you are saying,” “I feel hurt when you don’t let the dog out, and I would prefer you do it,” or, “You feel angry because I didn’t pick up the cleaning today,” doesn’t help you get to the heart of the fight. Yes, you should take responsibility, but real couples—happy ones—don’t speak this way (Gottman 1994). Answer Key: Duh Monitor the times you consciously accentuate the positives. Strong relationships are brimming with positive, right-side-ofthe-continuum interactions. Remember, like all couples, these couples also fight. The difference is that they have more positive than negative interactions, and the destructive ones tend to decrease over time. They often tip the scales with a sense of humor and by expressing joy, affection, interest, and affirmation (Gottman 1999). You’re more likely to tip the scales to creative rather than destruc- tive if you keep track of your interactions. Share more yearnings; express your feelings; stay present, accessible, responsive, and connected. Start experimenting with the right side of the continuum. Engage fully with truth, responsibility, genuineness, and wholehearted emotional engagement. Who has not asked themselves at least once “how would I react if that happened to me?� Reading articles in the press which talk about tragedies taking place in our schools, hospitals, or malls entices dismay, pain, anger, and sadness. Unfortunately it does not provide any useful information that could help us to survive during one of those events. While thinking that something like that could never happen to us would be irrational, we should also avoid the other extreme of becoming paranoid to the point of not being able to live peacefully. So let's make this point clear first. The chances of becoming a victim of an active shooter incident are very low if we compare that to the possibility of dying from other causes. In the U.S.A. for example, there are some 55 million schools and, even though in recent years there has been a sharp increase of incidents, the average over the last two years has been of 20 shooter attacks a year with 16 deaths in 2014 and 18 deaths in 2015. This means there is a 1 in 2.5 million chance that a school is attacked.

This is not to say that the problem is not serious, but it gives a realistic picture of the proportions of the issue, and it also leads to the observation that a civilian is far more likely to fall prey to a common criminal than being part a massacre perpetrated by a shooter. And since the whole point I would like to raise is the necessity to be realistic, we need to accept that we live in a world with its dangers and getting ready to defend yourself is a wise practice.

This does not mean that I agree with those who would like to eliminate the active shooter drills altogether. I believe though that exercises for civilians should be made gradually. No Pattern Or Method To stop a shooter before they commit their crime there is still no real reliable solution, except the usual security protocols that include employing metal detectors, reports by acquaintances of the shooter, or weapon sellers. The reason effective prevention is difficult to implement is that up to now we can observe only very few common traits that are often recurrent between different perpetrators. To be specific, those are: planning the shooting in advance, the access to weapons sometimes found in their own home, having used weapons before the crime, having no criminal record. If You See Something, Say Some

“If You See Something, Say Something ™ is a national campaign that raises public awareness of the indicators of terrorism and terrorism-related crime, as well as the importance of reporting suspicious activity to state and local law enforcement.” This campaign is a serious effort to improve prevention. Unfortunately, it was recently observed that this could not prevent the massacre of San Bernardino, despite evidence that it could have been possible. In fact, after the event it emerged that some neighbors of the shooters had noticed the bizarre behavior of the couple, but they decided against warning the police for fear of being considered racists.

What Went Wrong? A national campaign alone cannot educate everyone. The reasons that can persuade someone to go to the authorities are too many and they are Page 110 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

different for each person, and as we saw in the San Bernardino shooting there are also many reasons that can deter someone from calling the police. Furthermore, consider also that not all people watch TV or do it consistently for several hours, a commercial of 30 seconds is unlikely to leave a permanent mark. I am convinced that it is important to take part to real courses to train your survival skills, understand how to identify a suspect and save your life during a shooting until the arrival of the police.

I suggest you watch it carefully since it gives a very good overview of what happens when you find yourself confronting an active shooter as well as the "run, hide, fight" method employed to survive. The video format is very convenient for companies and managers as it is specifically aimed to business entities that look forward to training their employees for these situations. Even if you elected not to spend too much time in reviewing the instructional material contained in the footage, I urge you to at least keep in mind the following captions as your guidelines. "Caption: RUN. When an active shooter is in your vicinity:  · If there is an escape path, attempt to evacuate.  · Evacuate Whether others agree to or not.  · Leave your belongings behind.  · Help others escape if possible. Private Training

As you can see from the video it is important to know your company and assess the various escape routes or places where you can hide. Consider, however, that you may have to confront a shooter during your shopping at the mall or at the parent-teacher conference of your children. These are places you may not be perfectly familiar with, meaning that you'll have to improvise. Although the first things to do are always running away or hiding, and fighting must be the last resort, it is nevertheless essential to learn to attack in order to defend themselves. Often times the First Responder will not be the police, but probably a civilian like you, but who may have received the training for active shooter incidents. For this purpose, I suggest you take the following course administered by FEMA:

IS-907: Active Shooter: What You Can Do “Course Objectives: Upon completing this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and responding law enforcement officials. 2. Recognize potential workplace violence indicators. 3. Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents. 4. Describe how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident. Another option is to contact a specialized private company that can train you more thoroughly. If you wonder whether it is worth paying to participate to these courses, also ask yourself what price you put on your life. As stated above, active shooter events are rare, but even so you may not get a second chance. I recommend you keep in mind that attending one course is not enough to stay prepared forever. Try to continue to retain the skills you learn fresh in your mind, but I am certain that once you complete your first course you will gain an understanding of your weaknesses and your strengths and you will know how to continue your preparation. I selected a few companies that run these courses and that should be suitable to people with a various backgrounds. Searching the Internet you can definitely find other alternatives, it's up to you to choose one that best suits your needs.

AVOID | DENY | DEFEND™ This course is held by the ALERRT™ Center at Texas State University and it is specifically geared to civilians and concerned citizens and teaches a structured method to survive active shooter events. Through their partner ESPADA they also offer a very convenient solution to hold the courses for your employees.

Sage Dynamics' Citizen Response to an Active Shooter This course is targeted to weapon carriers that seek more intense training. As such, it is slightly more advanced than the previous one and may only appeal to narrower audience. Remember that resolving to use your gun should be exclusively your last resort in a life -or-death situation. A civilian cannot and must not replace the law enforcement or the security specialists. Learning to defend yourself is paramount in my opinion, but I am also of the view that if possible you should always try to avoid direct physical confrontation, especially against an armed suspect. Common Symptoms of Dehydration. FATIGUE: Dehydration causes enzymatic activity to slow down. CONSTIPATION: During dehydration, the colon removes more water than normal in order to provide fluid for other parts of the body. DIGESTIVE DISORDERS: Dehydration reduces the secretion of digestive juices. This can be the root of heartburn, gastritis, and ulcers. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: The body’s blood volume is mostly water. Dehydration causes blood to thicken which makes it more difficult to pump. CHOLESTEROL: Dehydration causes cellular water loss. The body produces more cholesterol in an attempt to “seal off” water loss. RESPIRATORY TROUBLES: A large amount of water is exhaled during even normal breathing. Tips on Drinking Water. Some people know they don’t drinking enough, but others protest “I drink water all day long!” But if what you drink runs right through you, you are not getting the benefit, and are not, in fact, being hydrated. Here are the three elements I consider: 1. Input. Drink approximately half your weight in ounces of water each day. Coffee, tea (unless herbal), alcohol and soda don’t count! 2. Quality. Tap water isn’t always healthy, and I usually recommend a filter. An inexpensive charcoal filter (such as a Brita) often works well, or there are more comprehensive systems, such as Reverse Osmosis, that can be installed under the sink or for the whole home for a few hundred dollars. Uptake. As with nutrients, we can become less capable of absorbing and utilizing water. You’ve probably heard of “insulin resistance” as a diabetes marker. We can become “resistant” to other hormones and nutrients as well. f you can’t increase hydration by increasing water intake, it can indicate impaired resistance in general. Don’t increase your water by downing quarts at a time! Our kidneys have a remarkable ability to adjust output, but too much at once can actually dehydrate you, as it will take a lot of electrolytes with it. Instead, sip regularly in-between meals. (Drinking too much during meals dilutes your digestive enzymes, another no-no.) For heart health, it is important to maintain hydration at night, when we normally lose some, and to rehydrate again first thing in the morning. Bladder wake you up? That may be more a sleep issue. Tracey Hawkins Tracey was born in Fullerton, California on July 22nd, 1964. She grew up in Sonoma County, California, where, from a young age, she helped in the family's restaurant. Growing up in California's wine country, wine was a natural part of life. When the family purchased the 1,300 acre Lower Lake property which is now home to Hawk and Horse Vineyards, Tracey immediately resonated with the land and its rugged beauty. Regular visits evolved and she and Mitch eventually began running the ranch and developing Hawk and Horse Vineyards with the support of their family. Tracey and Mitch work closely together in all aspects of wine production, from farming and harvest decisions to winemaking and cooperage. Tracey serves as Executive Winemaker, liaising with the winery's Consulting Winemakers and is involved in all the substantive winemaking decisions. She has had the opportunity to work with and be mentored by some of the finest winemakers in the industry. Before starting Hawk and Horse Vineyards, Tracey worked in the wine industry for six years in sales and marketing. Tracey holds a degree in Creative Writing, summa cum laude, from San Francisco State University. She has also studied wine making through U.C. Davis and wine marketing at Sonoma State University. In her spare time, Tracey enjoys spending time with her children, cooking, and writing poetry. She also competes in amateur rodeo and gymkhana events. By Laura Brin After working in the corporate world for 20 years, Kathy Gundesen decided to make a change last year. She started a business on the side selling the hand-sewn bags she enjoyed creating in her free time. Now, one year later, she has left her corporate job to focus on Cape Haven Designs full time. Cape Haven sells a variety of products inspired by the beaches of the San Juan Islands where her family vacations. The colors and textures mimic the sand and water, and the brand evokes a calm and beachy feeling. Kathy wasn’t just interested in starting her company as a source of income. She also wanted to find a way to give back to causes near and dear to her. “In order to share the good life that I've been blessed with, I want my company to support organizations that effectively provide educational opportunities where none exist,” Kathy explains.

Kathy reached out to HER: Hope. Educate. Rise. as a potential partner last summer. She knows that the mission of HER and Central Asia Institute (CAI) fell in line with her values. “I have followed CAI’s work for a number of years. In countries that are more developed and industrialized, the majority of children and adults have basic educational opportunities, but we still see huge gaps in education elsewhere.” HER is a social fundraising program of CAI, and gives an opportunity for supporters to engage on a deeper level by raising funds and awareness about the organization’s mission. CAI is a nonprofit that has concentrated on education and literacy programs in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan for two decades. CAI started with the idea that every child deserves to learn, and that peace can be achieved through education, one child at a time. Programs include school building; providing school supplies and support; teacher training and salaries; higher education scholarships; women’s literacy and vocational centers; and other community-based projects. CAI’s philosophy is to work with communities to empower them to make the change in their own lives and communities. Each one of CAI’s projects is initiated, implemented, and managed by locals. A committee of local elders guides each selected project. Before a project starts, the community contributes project funds with local resources and labor. Commitment to this philosophy ensures a project’s viability and longterm success, and defines how we operate. In 1993, after a failed attempt to climb the world’s second highest mountain, K2, Greg Mortenson became enchanted with the local people of Pakistan, many of whom risked their lives every year serving as porters for mountaineers just like him. One day, in the impoverished village of Korphe, located high in the Karakorum mountain range of Pakistan, Mortenson witnessed some of the local children scratching their school lessons in the dirt. Appalled that children would have to endure such conditions and enamored with the kindness of the Balti people, Mortenson resolved to build a school. It would be many years before he could make good on his promise, but he did eventually fulfill it, thanks to the support of wealthy benefactor and fellow climber, Dr. Jean Hoerni. Inspired by Mortenson’s passion and drive, Hoerni agreed to underwrite a bridge and school for the village. Though Mortenson and Hoerni had no way of knowing when they first created the organization, Page 138 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

CAI would change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Over two decades, CAI’s programs and projects have expanded into other remote regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, many of them too dangerous or isolated for other organizations to reach. CAI’s success in these areas is because it maintains that the best method for sustainable, widespread change is to initiate projects requested by the community. The philosophy is “ask communities what they need, don’t tell them.” This philosophy has proven effective time and time again. To date, CAI has initiated over 450 projects, and hundreds of new requests for help cross our desks every day. So, what is important about education, especially for girls? Economic growth improves: · An increase of only 1 percent in girls’ secondary education attendance adds 0.3 percent to a country’s GDP · An extra year of secondary school can increase a girl’s potential income by 15-25 percent It prevents child marriage: · When a girl remains in secondary school, she is six times less likely to marry young. While CAI has been the facilitator to this important work, our accomplishments would not have been possible without the hundreds of thousands of donors, supporters, and volunteers that joined the girls’ education movement. Historically, over 90 percent of CAI funding has come from individuals – people all across the U.S. and the world have joined the cause – donating, fundraising, volunteering, and spreading the word about our mission of peace through education.

We know that without educating girls, a society won’t change. Educating one woman is equivalent to educating several men because a woman will share her knowledge with her family, her children, and her community, amplifying the impact of one school ten-fold. The impact on the community can also be seen in a variety of ways: Education improves health: · Children of literate mothers have a 50 percent greater chance of surviving past age 5. In April 2011, CAI experienced a setback. CBS aired programming that called into question CAI’s management of some programs and its finances. The organization, which is based in Montanta, worked diligently with the Montana Attorney General and internally to vigorously address those allegations to rectify perceived shortcomings. This included undergoing annual audits of finances and activities and entering into an agreement with the State of Montana to effectuate significant changes to ensure that CAI continues to operate as a charitable organization with the utmost integrity. As of April 2015, CAI has satisfactorily fulfilled all specific actions and obligations outlined in its agreement with the State of Montana. In addition, CAI has successfully completed examinations by the IRS and independent auditing/accounting firms, and has met or exceeded reporting requirements pertaining to transparency and accountability, including those of the nonprofit watchdog agencies GuideStar, Charity Navigator, and the Better Business Bureau. CAI has been forced to cut spending on overseas programs due to decreased funding. However, CAI’s core donors stood with us. Our loyal supporters saw that our dedication to our mission stood strong. One $50 donation can send a girl to school for a year. $100 can buy life-saving supplies used by a local midwife. $1,000 raised can pay an annual teacher’s salary, educating an entire classroom of children. Franchises Women are Likely to Excel In... By David Goodman Although, I am a man, I have been alive on this planet Earth for approaching 70 years and have seen women excel in so many areas of business due to their inherent strengths. It would be extremely biased for anyone to deny acknowledgement of those benefits in the business of franchising. That

is exactly why I feel this article should be read by every woman anticipating or dreaming about owning their own business and taking full control of their own financial destiny. Page 144 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Initially this article, to some, may seem a tad chauvinistic. However, please don’t be disheartened, there is a method to my madness.

The Evolution of Franchising The franchise business or for that matter any business, is no longer a game for only men. There are specific traits that are part of a woman’s make up that make them “a natural” in certain areas of franchising. A Business in a Box

Their hopes were to go to a 4 year university and finish their degrees so they could be an educator, hopefully, at a near-by school. However, Betty had an unfortunate turn of events and was broadsided by a drunk driver and needed both children to help her in a very lengthy recovery. The good news is that Betty fully recovered and was awarded a sum of money that she leveraged by putting both daughters in the closet design business. Total kitchen revamping franchises are also perfect for women. I remember a candidate who called me and said that he has done kitchen remodeling, actually as a hobby, off and on for 30 years. His real love was running his own machine facility and he was just about ready to retire. His daughter worked with him when she was a little girl helping with kitchen design. Now that she has grown and had a family of her own. Her husband had left to pursue another life and left her high and dry. She needed to have her own business. I told the daughter, Marsha, that I did have a number of franchises that would fit in that particular business arena. However, owning your own business is very different than simply having a knack for design. out for her. From specific and proprietary design software, business introduction, contractor identification, connections and manufacturer locations, marketing programs, an ongoing support staff and mentor group, business location identifier, lease negotiations, and proven successful system. Basically a business in a box! I think the happiest person relative to this placement was Marsha’s dad. Now he could retire knowing that he has not just given his daughter a large supply of fish but has actually supplied her with the means to learn how to fish for herself; forever! 35 Franchises for Child Development Also, it is well known that women are nurturing and dedicated to children, child rearing and development. That

is why I have approaching 30 franchises that are targeted toward, physical, mental, emotional, and scholastic growth of children; From the very youngest to even our senior citizens. I know of one child educational franchise in particular, whose top producer on a national scale is a woman. Now, every one of this grouping of franchises is looking for some very specific things to ferret out the most qualified candidates. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html


They look for passion, a motivation to own your own business, drive and determination, ability to follow a proven system, strong networking skills, managerial ability, communication skills and a high degree of creativity. None of these franchisors are looking for anyone with an education background. I would like to highlight yet another category where women may excel in franchising, Home Health Care. The obvious give away is that the vast plurality of nurses are women. Incidentally, I am one of the exceptions, I am, among my titles a Registered Nurse. I remember very vividly driving my three young children ages 4,5,and 6, back to the house. They were all in the back in their respective child restraint seats. Then, all of a sudden my 4 year old son said, “Daddy, I know that you are not a nurse. Jamie Clark is the smartest girl in my kindergarten class and she said only girls are nurses!” I guess Jamie Clark may not be the smartest girl in the class, after all! Home Health Care is Huge Suffice it to say, Home Health Care Industry is huge. There are 15 to 20 million people over 65 in this country and officials say that in ten years those numbers may double. Although, I do not have any hard data on how many women are in that field, I can attest to personal experience. I was the Director of Nursing for a home health care facility. The owner was a woman, the head of nursing care was a woman and virtually every one of the nurses were women. I would venture to guess that scenario is indicative of many home health care businesses. However, there is a very key point that needs to be addressed. One does not need to have any prior or formal training, or be male or female to own a senior care facility of just about any type. And there are many types. That is the reason why I have almost 40 different Home Health Care franchise models to choose from. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html


However, since they are franchises, they all have certain characteristics. There is an extensive training period, support and mentorship is ongoing, any of the nuances regarding, the business is typically addressed in exhaustive detail. The franchisor gives protected territory. Many franchises offer national advertising to its brand and help with every phase of the business. Once again, being a nurse, has nothing to do with success. Actually the nursing segment, whether, skilled or unskilled, although important, is only one part of the overall business model. All the other pieces of the business need to fit. The Franchisors are experts at helping the candidate obtain the correct personnel with the appropriate credentials plus training, teaching and guiding the franchisee to success.

The Developing Pattern? I hope the reader is beginning to see a pattern developing? In none of the examples mentioned in the aforementioned paragraphs, did I ever mention that the franchisors were looking for anyone experienced in a certain field. On the contrary, they thirst for candidates with general business skills. According to many franchisors only about 15% of their franchisee base had valuable prior experience in the franchise Page 149 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

they chose. That means 85% of all franchisees had no prior knowledge, disposition, or training in the franchise that became their final destination. Franchisors are looking for people to work on the business not in the business. Obviously that fact begs the initial premise that women are pre-disposed to do well in certain franchises. The true fact is the business entity which we will dub “Franchises”, is a non-biased structure that for the most part, only reacts negatively or positively to what level one stays within the system outlined by the franchisor. In other words, you choose what franchise meets your own personal needs and your success could ultimately be measured by how well and conscientious you adhere to the franchisor’s system outline. Once again, utilizing my quasi-scientific research, that being, no man I know actually follows assembly directions for anything. Marilyn Harris, is a true Champion for women, leading thousands of Veteran and other women into elevation today into their own expansions and elevations both personally and professionally, by providing resources and education for women business owners. Marilyn’s unique strength manifested from her foundation of challenging her own PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) into a National Movement for other Veteran Women. Marilyn initially began her foundation of leadership and strength in her own service in the Military, as a former Medic and Certified Vocational Nurse in the U.S. Army from 1981- 1992. In her early years of service, the internal routine, for many women who did not comply with the sexual pressure, many times led for women to actually be Court Martialed or simply lowered in ranks or out casted by their male peers in a mental health brandishing to even a Dishonorable Discharge. To face extreme adversity and discounted violations is in itself a woman’s greatest test, but to Champion one’s experiences and support other women on the vast level that Marilyn has initiated, reflects on her depth of moral integrity. It was not enough for Marylyn Harris to accept the Military Silent Code in her days of service, and upon her return to the public sector after her service, she had to address her own Military Sexual Trauma and PTSD issues by regularly attending Combat Woman Support Groups. In any roads of violation, elevation can manifest a purpose and growth for thousands of other women. Marylyn returned to her Nursing career and growth in her own Home Health Consultant business while continuing in education, yet she was always aware there was a need to manifest a change, an elevation and support behind Veteran Women.

More than 30,000 women veterans in her local Houston office and eventually over 191,000 across the entire state of Texas received support in their own needs to actualize their economic growth in success in their developments of their own businesses. The Mission of the Women Veterans Business Center (WVBC), located in Houston, TX is to educate and empower women veterans, and their families who together work towards empowerment of women veterans after post-Military challenges many face, including potential PTSD, unemployment, depression or even mental illness or homelessness without the support behind their recovery and economic growth. Marylyn Harris only fittingly as a “Champion” and one that elevates “Change” in her daily support behind over two hundred thousand veteran women, was met with a very surprising phone call which appeared on her Caller ID, as “White House,” in a day, like no other she will

Marylyn continues to be Honored with various Awards and was recognized as a Veteran Business Champion of the Year for five- state Small Business Administration Region VI. In 2014, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UT Health School of Nursing in Houston and is today still growing, in her devotion to obtain her PHd in Nursing. There is no limitation of supportive growth for veteran women who connect to Marylyn Harris, who is one of the most approachable and nurturing leaders for women today. As she concludes, “we all need one another and we must stay connected as women to truly align our resources for extended educational workshops, speaker events and unique elevations to address the needs of women today. Four Factors Influencing Why We Buy Shawn Sandy, The Selling Agency

www.thesellingagency.com These last 5-10 years have seen significant changes in the influences driving consumer purchasing behavior. And “selling” to modern consumers has changed dramatically too, however, from our insight into our clients organizations and what we’re hearing about selling, in general, is that Sales as a profession, has been slow to realize and adapt to the changes. This spells out BIG, mega opportunities for differentiation and market growth for companies that put the time and effort in to harnessing the power of these influences and driving forces: Biology, Psychology, Sociology & Technology.

Biology

Our advance, homosapien, brain, “The Neocortex”, is where we process language, rationalize and analyze incoming information. It is NOT, however, where we make decisions. “The Lymbic System” is where we generate “feelings” and our subconscious brain lives here – keeping us breathing, remembering how to stay alive without thinking about it. This “cave-man” brain is where we make our decisions. So, though you can analyze, rationalize and itemize like Einstein, if your “gut” feels it’s not right, you’ll fight that decision. We tend to go with our instinct, intuition, gut – our “feeling” first and then rationalize the decision to back up our choice.

Studying biology or buying decisions is not anything radically new, however having a better understanding of the way we take in information, process it and make decisions helps us understand some of the basic and fundamental truths we experience as buyers.

Why is this important when you’re selling? Because if people don’t have a good “feeling” ie – “Trust” about you, you’ll most likely never influence the decision to buy you.

It’s this “feeling” brain that really brings us on board or turns us off when we make choices. Because


of analyzing, our choices reflect our most personal values and character – even in business. Think about the business choices or purchases every day that you feel good about making? Do you “shop local” because you want to support your neighbors and community economy? What about buying a certain brand of shoes because they give a pair to someone under privileged? Or what about corporate purchasing decisions that are driven by a vendor’s “carbon footprint”? None of these are examples of price motivated decisions {though costs are always considered, you may pay more because you share values}. These are examples of doing business with people who believe what you believe. Customers don’t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it. How do you leverage BIOLOGY in Selling?

Don’t seek to sell, seek to understand and earn trust.

start a business, find a problem and solve it.” Understand your customers’ problems and work to solve those. Earning trust doesn’t mean you’re altruistic, it means selling something someone values and is mutually beneficial. Earning trust is about helping people buy instead of selling to them. Helping people buy is providing insight and information, being visible, vocal and a leader in your industry, not a sales person trying to hit your quota.

Be transparent and authentic. Knowing why you started your business and openly sharing your beliefs, perspective and passion, gives buyers the opportunity to connect their values to your values which makes you valuable. Doing what you say you’ll do and living your core values authentically builds credibility and trust – both which speak to buyers’ “gut feeling” and help them make decisions to buy you.

Psychology Remember that “primitive” brain in charge? Yeah, the one making decisions for us? Another important function it provides is alerting us to danger – putting us on alert and creating “fear” {my least favorite “F” word}. Our sense of fear still functions in much of a “maintain survival” mode – which makes many of our responses basic or primitive in nature but disproportionate to the amount of actual risk involved in a choice. For example, you have to stand up in front of your colleagues and recap your division’s quarterly progress, your “fear” alert reacts primitively like you’re going to leave the cave and there are hungry bears outside waiting to eat you. This response has you sweating, feeling sick to your stomach and wanting to pass out or run. However, what really could happen is you mess up a few words, you look nervous and people think you’re not the greatest presenter. Chances of death, being mauled, losing your job or even falling down are slim to none but your brain and your body fear the worst.

Maintaining, keeping, fighting for the Status Quo is the neutral gear most buyers operate in – especially in Business to Business channels. The known is safe. More of the same yields fewer unfavorable surprise outcomes. Making a switch to a new vendor, a new brand a new company carries much risk. Fear of making a bad decision is more powerful than making a good decision. We will make more decisions influenced by the Fear of loss than making choices that lead to potential gains. How do you leverage Psychology in Selling?

Share control with customers. Developing products and solutions to problems with your customers gives them a feeling of control in their outcome. Fewer surprises, more communication and collaboration are not only comforting, but they yield more satisfied customers that had very positive experiences and are more willing to share those positive experiences {And P.S. - You’ve just created advocates}

Sociology Relating our experiences – as with story telling – goes back to our talk of Cave Man days. Word of mouth marketing is pretty much the same as drawing symbols on the cave where “Ug tells Grugg where to find the best moss for making cave pillows.” Our socialization in the way we relate and trust business has changed tremendously in the last 20 years thanks to technology and the internet. Our access to people and information has reformed the notions of “community” and transcended physical and geographical limitations. The sense of belonging isn’t restricted to neighborhoods, chambers or states – we can talk and socialize with people all over the world. In fact, over 80% of the world’s online population can be reached via a Social Network. Our ability and desire to build and maintain meaningful connections with anyone over anything goes beyond our personal and social experiences and carries over to be the new “norm” or expectation in ALL our experiences – both personal and professional, business and pleasure. Customer experience is now a major differentiating factor in business. When all other variables are relatively equal – price, terms, delivery – the vendor that delivers the best experience, wins the customer. And whether your social circles are your church groups or a forum for cricket farmers, the new norm is to share those experiences – good and bad, with those audiences. Our social circles are where we seek information and insight to make purchasing decisions – lowering risk through understanding other’s experiences. “Social proof” is word of mouth advertising like we’ve never seen before. It’s so powerful because with increased technology and transparency, our trust in companies, advertising and corporate scripted messages is extremely low. Big companies have been exposed for false advertising, lying, cheating shareholders, scandals, immoral practices, et cetera. In reality, the bad behavior that has broken consumer trust is a miniscule fraction of business, but because it’s so visible and so accessible now, consumers are wary. Buyer to company trust is only at 33% whereas Buyer to Buyer trust is at a 92% threshold. We will take trust the word of a stranger or acquaintance over what YOU say about your company. How do you leverage Sociology in Selling?

Design your interactions and customer experience from the customers’ perspective. We presume too much about what customers want from us or what they find valuable and useful. Ask your customers how they want to communicate with you and what they want to know about you, your company, your product and or offers. Understand how you fit in to their bigger problems and be a part of their total solution. No purchase is ever made in a vacuum. If you sell fleet pickup trucks, your customers also make purchases of bed liners, tool boxes, gas cards, and hitches. clients also makes decisions about employee benefits, payroll and legal. Agile businesses design experiences and engagements to reflect the reality and context of their customers. Becoming a part of your customers’ “community” makes it easier to build trust – and easier for them to buy from you.

Focus on generating building advocates for your business. Make it really easy for people to find your and choose you. Where are your customers “hanging” out – online and in person? Who are they asking advice from about purchases? Be there, be of value to them and engage with them. Give your clients the words, tools and channels to advocate for your business and you must ask your advocates to be vocal about their great experiences. Everyone wants to give great advice, be validated by making great recommendations so help your advocates refer you in a way that makes them look smart and helpful.

Technology The biggest factor in how buying has changed in recent years has been technology. And this is the factor that has thrown sellers the biggest loop. Technology gives us the access to vast amounts of information and shifts leverage of the buying journey to the buyer. We can research the owners of companies, find who sits on boards of directors of non profits and make informed decisions about doing business with companies that share our values or provide us the most value. Technology allows us immediacy, instant access and can remove many of the “service” barriers {or in some instances, makes things worse}. Social technology use has given customers more leverage to call out bad business, demand answers and solutions and has provided a venue to voice opinions about poor service as well as rave about great experiences. Technology can shorten the distance between big business, small business and consumers – leveling the playing field in many instances. Many businesses large and small are doing a fantastic job of expediting service issues by “listening” and being available on social media. Those who aren’t evolving and adopting social technology strategies will be replaced or left behind. How do you leverage Technology in Selling?

Leverage the internet to reach and influence your customers before they need you. If your customers aren’t finding you in the internet, you don’t exist. Not only do you need to be “found” but you need to contribute to your customer’s research process. Providing the basics about your product or service is barely scraping by now.

Dive deeper in to your customers’ problems to give them data, science, opinion, perspective and expertise. This can be a blog, white papers, case studies, portfolios or videos on your website. It can also be contributing answers or perspective to a forum where your buyers are asking questions or engaging with them on twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook – wherever they hang out or do their purchasing research. Being visible and valuable to help them buy is how you influence their purchasing decisions. It’s a combination of efforts in marketing, selling, social media and buyer persona that contributes to your Audience Development efforts. Also want to congratulate Nafe member from Palm Springs, Ca., Dr Sharron Stroud who just received a star on the walk of stars in Palm Springs for her Humanitarian work, I was able to be there to see this event and it was beautiful. Congratulations also to South Orange County, CA, Nafe Director Mikki St. Germain who coaches a young boys football team, she did such a great job with them that they won the area super bowl for their league, what’s even more impressive is that she is the first woman coach for the football league in Orange County and took those young men to the top. Nafe has so many wonderful Nafe women doing incredible things. We have some dynamic Nafe members speaking at our upcoming 2016 Nafe Conference.
