A record-breaking winter has all but completely frozen the Northeast, and even the Atlantic Ocean is being affected.

On Nantucket, Massachusetts, photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh captured a series of photos that show waves transformed into a slurpee-like mixture in the area's extreme cold.

"I saw these crazy half-frozen waves. Usually on a summer day you can hear the waves crashing, but it was absolutely silent. It was like I had earplugs in my ears," Nimerfroh told The New York Times

Nimerfroh says that the temperature the day he took the photos was near 19 degrees. Ice hadn't completely covered the surface of the water, and waves were still able to move and create the off-putting slurpee effect.

A day later, the water had completely frozen.

“Nothing was moving,” Nimerfroh said. “There were no waves anymore.”

According to the National Oceanice and Atmospheric Administration, ocean water freezes at lower temperatures than fresh water because of the salt in it. The freezing point for fresh water is 32 degress Fahrenheit and 28.4 degrees for sea water.
