Christy Clark appoints LNG industry leader to B.C.'s new Climate Leadership Team

The B.C. government's new Climate Leadership Team doesn't include executives from Enbridge and Kinder Morgan, which are companies that want to build new pipelines from the tar sands to the B.C. coast.

But one of the team's members is a representative of the liquefied natural gas industry, which is also working on pipeline projects around the province.

David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, previously held senior roles with BG Canada, Dynegy, Apache Corp., and Conoco, all energy companies with major interests in fossil fuels.

According to a provincial news release, the Climate Leadership Team is expected to, among other things, recommend in October "updates to the current Climate Action Plan as well as new programs and policies required to meet B.C.'s greenhouse gas reduction targets while maintaining strong economic growth and successfully implementing the BC Jobs Plan, including the liquefied natural gas strategy".

In March 2016, a final Climate Leadership Plan is slated to be released by the government.

"We're taking the next step in climate leadership by engaging with British Columbians on new climate actions to support a growing economy," Premier Christy Clark stated in the release. "The Climate Leadership Team brings together leaders from the business, academic and environmental communities, as well as First Nations and local governments, to consider the best actions to keep us on track toward meeting our greenhouse gas reduction targets. Thank you to the team members for accepting the challenge of helping B.C. develop our new Climate Leadership Plan."

The headline makes it sound way worse that it actually is, when you consider the full list. In fact the list is much more well-rounded than I might have expected, as the people on that list I'm familiar with (Berman and Robinson, for example) are pretty strong environmentalists and are definitely serious about climate change. It's not the end of the world to include a small number of industry reps as well.

How about adding Professor Wade Davis to the crew..? Much more useful and trustworthy. Interesting that the title is climate leadership as poised to climate change. So backwards and misleading this government. Anything to support LNG which is a fossil fuel dependent industry is an absolute sham to any kind of climate "leadership". We need to get off fossil fuels. Period.

I question whether this group will have a full-on in-person meeting before Christmas. Show us the minutes, Christy!

Note no representatives from the British Columbia's Engineering community, the only ones qualified to tell us how to deal with climate issues.

China run by engineers is doing something about climate change - the west run by folks with arts degrees - absolutely nothing but yak.

Meanwhile the corrupt politician stuffs his pockets with Big Oil lolly and 7 million die annually needlessly from the air pollution. WHo cares anyway?

Mike Bernier is listed as "Parliamentary Secretary for Energy L:literacy and the Environment". This contradictory title says it all about the BC Liberal government.

This BC ConLib ClusterFudge describes Tzeporah Berman as a "strategic advisor on clean energy, oil sands and pipelines".
This implies that she has experience helping companies develop strategies to overcome public resistance to environmentally dangerous resource extraction and transport.

Quelle surprise!!! The "Queen of Green" selling out for bitumen bucks. I'm so (not) shocked.

Putting Keane on the Climate Leadership Team is like having the fox guard the hen house.

"We're taking the next step in climate leadership by engaging with British Columbians on new climate actions to support a growing economy,"

Obviously not aware that #climate is a full blown emergency!
