Arye Mekel of Israel’s Foreign Ministry explained “We willsend well-known novelists and writers overseas, theatre companies, exhibits… This way you show Israel’s prettier face, so we are not thought of purely in the context of war.” Shall EBU contribute to the hiding of the ugly truth, by pretending it doesn't exist? We say NO of course not. Palestinian artists and musicians are routinely prevented from performing abroad as the result when Israel often refuses to allow Palestinians to cross military checkpoints leading to a dead end instead of the airport. Shall EBU pretend as if Israel never did this? Shall EBU allow Israel to wave the flag of the oppressor in the face of all the Palestinian viewers, many as refugees in Europe, and human rights activists and right minded people? We say NO.
