Sorry, long delay in replying. The sharks were swimming close into shore and passing under a pier. I was taking the photos from there :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken looking over the side of the pier at Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The island is a paradise for anyone who wants to see and photograph wildlife with everything from sea birds to turtles coming in close to visitors on a daily basis.

Time

This photo was taken by chance due to a mid morning walk down to the pier. I was lucky enough to arrive just as the sharks turned up to hunt for their breakfast.

Lighting

I was very fortunate with the natural lighting. Being morning the sun was coming in from an angle and preventing most of the bright backscatter you often get if taking a photo directly through the water from above. No additional strobe or flash was used.

Equipment

Just the camera attached with a safety strap to my hand. Leaning over and through the railing of the pier didn't lend itself well to tripod use!

Inspiration

This was one of the most amazing thing's I'd ever seen, I was so glad to have my camera with me that day. Sharks are a very maligned species and are unfortunately often seen as nothing but unthinking killing machines which I have never found to be the case. In reality they are beautiful in their own way, which I hope has come through in the photo with this shark gracefully moving though the water with the school of fish parting before him. This day there was a group of three large lemon sharks working quietly and calmly together within meters of the shore, herding a large school of bait fish into densely packed groups trapped between themselves and the sand. They'd then take turns to rush through the fish at high speed catching them, while waiting sea birds took advantage of the situation and grabbed up any fish unfortunate enough to beach themselves or jump clear of the water. They continued doing this for over half an hour. I feel very fortunate to have witnessed this and to be able to share my photos with others.

Editing

The post processing on this photo was fairly minimal. Mainly just adjusting the colour and contrast a little to reflect what I actually saw.

In my camera bag

Most commonly? My Canon S120 (recently replacing my S90 which I used for this photograph). They can take nice photos for a compact camera and I find the small size means I'll often have it with me as it's easy to slip into a pocket. For anything else above the water I've started working with a Canon EOS 760D. For underwater photography, I have my s120 in a canon casing and often use an ion s-2000 strobe. It's a compact set up which is quite easy to swim with even then freediving.

Feedback

Honestly, the main thing I find is to always keep your eyes open. It's surprising how many times I've had the opportunity to take photographs that I was never expecting to have including this one. Technically for this particular photo, I was fortunate in that it was morning without bright sunlight causing too many reflections off the surface of the water. If there is bright sun overhead when the wildlife decide to appear, sometimes using the shadows from the pier or boat can help make the photos through the water seem clearer. I also had a platform to wait until the sharks were just below me so I could take the photos directly from above rather than from the shore where the impact wouldn't have been as great.
