In what could be termed as first such acceptance, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Friday admitted that some party leaders were “maligning” the ruling party’s image by being involved in “land grabbing”, “loot-khasot” and “hooliganism”.

“Party ke kuch karyakarta zamin, paisa, loot-khasot aur dabangai me lage hain. Inhe sarkar banwane se matlab nahi hai,” (Some party workers are involved in land grab, loot, and hooliganism. They are not interested in helping the SP form the government again in 2017),” Mulayam said.

“Such workers are maligning image of the party. What district presidents and devoted workers are doing…I have report of everyone. I have to run the party…,” Mulayam said while asking the workers to be careful with their “behaviour” for the “image of the party” and let him know about any person involved in such illegal activities.

The statement comes after BJP national president Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party soon after violence broke out on June 2 in Mathura when police reached Jawahar Bagh — a sprawling public park — to get it vacated from squatters.

Festive offer

The violence had claimed 29 lives, including that of two police officers. In a pointed attack, Shah had alleged that several SP leaders, including a cabinet minister in UP and a Rajya Sabha member, had patronised the squatters in Mathura and were also involved in land grabbing. He also had got an email ID, kabja.hatao@bjp.org registered asking public to lodge complaints about land grabbing.

After Mulayam’s statement, BJP reacted sharply saying that SP supremo had only accepted what they had been alleging. “Mulayam has accepted what we have been saying. There is no law and order in the state and SP leaders and workers are involved in criminal activities,” BJP state president Keshav Prasad Maurya said.

Meanwhile, Mulayam said that public knows how to help a party form the government or remove it from the power. He
asked workers to maintain “good relation and good behaviour” with public so that the party could come to power
again.

“We have been in the government in the state four times. If party comes to power again, it will be an achievement,” Mulayam said.

Earlier, addressing the gathering at the party office, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that a memorial for first “Samajwadi Prime Minister” Chandrashekhar would be constructed in Ballia.
