Horse Racing

Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and newly elected Hall of Famer, was bred to Medaglia d'Oro for the 2017 foaling season.

The mating was announced Monday on the official Zenyatta website, which added that the mare would be checked in 15 days to determine whether she was in foal.

It marked the fifth trip to the breeding shed for Zenyatta, a 12-year-old daughter of Street Cry, and her second trip to a stallion at Darley's Jonabell Farm. The late Street Cry also stood at Darley's U.S. base.

Her first foal, the Bernardini colt Cozmic One, is winless in two career starts, while her second foal, the Tapit colt Ziconic, has placed in one of two starts. She was bred to War Front for her third mating and produced a filly who was euthanized as a weanling following a paddock accident.

After being given a year off from breeding, Zenyatta produced another War Front filly who died April 13, three days after being born, due to complications from meconium aspiration.

Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, Zenyatta resides at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky.

Medaglia d'Oro, a 17-year-old son of El Prado, stands for an advertised fee of $150,000, making him one of the highest-priced stallions in North America. He has sired nine crops of racing age, with 524 winners and progeny earnings of more than $74.4 million.

His most prominent foal is Rachel Alexandra, who beat out Zenyatta in the 2009 Horse of the Year vote by a margin of 130-99 and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the same class.

Other notable runners sired by Medaglia d'Oro include the champion Songbird, Australian champion Vancouver, Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty, and Grade 1 or Group 1 winners Passion for Gold, Mshawish, Marketing Mix, Coffee Clique, C. S. Silk, Lochte, and Violence.

Medaglia d'Oro won eight of 17 starts for earnings of $5,754,720, highlighted by Grade 1 wins in the Travers Stakes, Whitney Handicap, and Donn Handicap and Grade 2 wins in the Jim Dandy Stakes, Oaklawn Handicap, Strub Stakes, and San Felipe Stakes. He was twice a runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
