As Modi government focuses on renewable energy, defence and aerospace PSU HAL (Hindustan Aeroonautics Limited) has inaugurated a 6.3MW wind energy power plant. The wind energy plant is situated in Karnataka’s Harapanahalli.
According to HAL, the power generated from this plant would be used for captive energy consumption at Bengaluru. The plant has three wind turbines installed in collaboration with Suzlon Energy. The plant has the potential to generate 150 lakh units per annum with an estimated annual savings of approximately Rs 9 crore to the HAL.
“This is the first ever megawatt scale renewable energy project that HAL has set up at a cost of about Rs 44 crore. More such avenues would be explored in future,” the PSU said.

Speaking on the inauguration, T Suvarna Raju, CMD of HAL said, “HAL would reduce its carbon footprint by around 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions per annum with this initiative.” “This project would cater to about 15% energy consumption at Bangalore-based divisions,” he added.
HAL’s release states that the windmill is a hybrid type design and has a lattice portion and a tubular section. “The rotor diameter is 97 meters and the length of each blade is 47.5 meters. The swept area of the blades is 7,390 square meters,” says HAL.
The turbine is designed for 20 years of operation.
The move is a boost to Modi government’s focus on renewables and attempts to reduce carbon footprint. Indian Railways, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation are some of the big organisations that are aggressively taking up the task of generating power through solar initiatives.
