ON CAMPUS: College life on display

Article content

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a spa technician? A paramedic? Or a welder? Maybe you have a business idea, but are unsure where to start.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with students who are one step closer to achieving their dreams and meet professors who are helping them get there. When it comes to grads getting jobs, Loyalist is the No. 1 college in Ontario.
At Open House, you can tour the campus, get a feel for college life and discover what it’s like to learn in Loyalist’s state-of-the-art Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre.
In this facility, Biotechnology students learn in Instrumentation and Molecular Biology labs equipped with PCR and DNA sequencing technology. They experience a wide variety of instrumentation used in genetics, microbiology, fermentation and forensics. Our Biotechnology graduates work in positions such as chemical engineering technologists, quality assurance and quality control lab technicians, health researchers and brew masters.
While you’re touring the campus, visit the Digital Media Centre (DMC). It’s where the next wave of cutting-edge journalists deliver the news and learn reporting, writing and editing skills for online, television, radio and print.
Journalism is an ever-evolving industry and the DMC is a unique space where students work in an all-in-one platform newsroom. They’re part of a team of reporters, ENG shooters, producers, anchors and editors. Together, they produce a web-based television newscast and publish original work for the student-produced community online news service, QNet News (qnetnews.ca). They also create newscasts for the federally licensed college radio station, 91X.
Are you an entrepreneur? Loyalist’s Entrepreneurial Studies — Business Launch post-grad program applies the principles of entrepreneurship to develop a scalable, repeatable and successful business model with guidance from experienced faculty and a powerful network of expert advisors and community partners.
This program is delivered in Strathcona Energy Group’s new headquarters at 250 Sidney St. in Belleville. Students work alongside international companies as they develop ideas and opportunities for the Bay of Quinte region and launch their own start-up in less than a year.
If you’ve been laid off, explore the Second Career program, which helps unemployed individuals train for new careers in emerging sectors of the economy. It covers up to $28,000 (or more, in some cases) for tuition and expenses such as books, travel, transportation, disability supports and basic living costs. This cost-sharing grant is provided on the basis of need, so applicants may be asked to contribute to their education. If you’re not sure which program to take, consult with Loyalist faculty about more than 60 full-time programs, including more than 20 starting this January. Discover the difference that comes from small classes, hands-on learning and amazing field placements.
Don’t forget to ask about our diploma-to-degree pathways. By starting at Loyalist, you’ll save on both living and tuition costs – and gain practical experience before you head off to university. Double your credentials – and your career opportunities.
Join us for Open House on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and you’ll have the chance to be entered into a draw for $2,000 toward first-year, 2016-2017 tuition. Participants from Loyalist’s Fall Open House are also entered into this draw.
