Feinstein: GOP deal one of the ‘worst budgets’ I’ve ever seen
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Monday that the bicameral Republican budget deal is one of “the worst budgets I’ve seen in my 22 years in the Senate.”
The Senate is expected to vote on the agreement this week after the House adopted it last Thursday in a 226-197 vote.
“It represents a major step backward for the country and needs significant changes,” Feinstein said in a statement.
{mosads}The California Democrat appeared to refer to the recent riot in Baltimore, suggesting that issues on race and law enforcement were tied to economic policies promoted by Republicans.
“The heartbreaking unrest we’re seeing spread across the country is rooted in economic hopelessness, and I believe Congress needs to do more to address it,” she said.
“But instead of helping working-class families, Congress will soon debate a budget that could gut some of the most important federal programs like Medicaid, Head Start, Pell Grants, job training and tax credits for working families.
The budget is a non-binding document that isn’t signed by the president. It only sets topline budget limits appropriators use to write the government’s spending bills.
If adopted by the Senate, the GOP budget would also trigger the reconciliation process that Republicans intend to use to send a repeal of ObamaCare to President Obama’s desk. Obama has vowed to veto that bill.
