UPDATE @ 4:15 p.m.: Belleville Fire Prevention Staff say a quick-thinking employee made a difference during a mid-day garage fire behind a city towing business Thursday.
Firefighters were called to the spot on Station Street, around 1:20 p.m., where an employee had smelled smoke and attempted to put out the flames with fire extinguishers before they spread to the roof.
The blaze was not far from Belleville Fire Station #1 and firefighters from both stations one and two were able to put out the flames quickly, once they got on scene.
Fire Prevention Officer Norm Mitts says the fire was contained to an exterior wall and that damage costs shouldn’t exceed $1,000, but “it could have been much, much worse”.
A cause is under investigation, but is not suspicious, with fire inspectors looking at a wood stove as a possible source of the blaze.
