Looking at the last quartet of regular season fixtures, a special bobblehead night this Sunday and more.

Home (and away) stretch: Between preseason, league play, U.S. Open Cup competition and a historic trip to Cuba, the New York Cosmos have played over 30 matches this year. Now only four remain before The Championship, the NASL’s four-team postseason tournament.

Starting Wednesday night in Atlanta, the Cosmos will close out their league campaign with the Silverbacks, FC Edmonton, the San Antonio Scorpions and the Tampa Bay Rowdies. They’ll host the Eddies this Sunday, October 11 and the Rowdies in a regular season finale October 31. Toyota Field beckons for the October 24 matchup against San Antonio.

With this past weekend’s results New York is out of the running for a Fall Season title. But the Spring champions are alive in the race for the best overall record. It’s a three-team battle at the top between the Cosmos (44 points), Minnesota United (46) and current leaders Ottawa Fury FC (48), who clinched their place in the postseason with a 2-0 win against Edmonton over the weekend.

No head-to-head opportunity remains for the Cosmos to gain ground on the Fury or Loons, but Ottawa will play three of its final four away from TD Place. Unfortunately for New York, the Fury have won their last six road games.

Called up: Andrés Flores is set to join El Salvador’s national team once again, this time for a pair of friendlies against Haiti this Friday in Houston and Guatemala next Tuesday in Carson, Calif. The 25-year-old midfielder has been a standout performer with the club of late, earning back-to-back Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match awards September 22 and October 4.

In September he helped his country reach the fourth round of qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Next month the Salvadorians will host Canada at Estadio Cuscatlán, resuming their quest to reach their first World Cup in over 30 years.

The people’s champ: Earlier this season Cosmos fans elected midfielder Danny Szetela to be immortalized in doll form. This Sunday fans can at last get their hands on the Szetela bobblehead in all its bearded glory.

Come out to Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium early for Cosmos-Eddies this Sunday, October 11 and get your Szetela bobblehead presented by Emirates. They’ll be handed out to the first 3,000 fans inside the stadium. The Cosmos are out for payback following a 2-1 defeat at Clarke Field on September 27. This is one of just two remaining home games in the regular season, and it kicks off at 5 p.m. ET.

Peaking at the right time: The United States Under-17 national team, which features Cosmos striker Haji Wright and defender Alexis Velela, has won its last two matches in preparation for the U-17 World Cup in Chile this month. The Americans defeated Mexico 1-0 in Mexico City September 25 and bested South Korea 2-1 in Bradenton, Fla. this past Tuesday.

All three teams have qualified to compete for the cup when the competition begins October 17. Read this interview with U.S. U-17 head coach Richie Williams for perspective on the 21-player U.S. squad.
