August events at the Patrick Senior Center in Kings Mountain

The following events are scheduled at the Patrick Senior Center, 909 E. King St., Kings Mountain. For more information, call 704-734-0447.

August

Aug. 12: Dutch Lunch Bunch, traveling to McAlister’s in Gastonia, cost $1 for transportation (plus lunch on your own.) Sign up in the gift shop by paying $1 to reserve a seat.

Aug. 19: 10 a.m., Blood pressure clinic sponsored by Gentiva, a Home Health Agency.

Aug. 28: 10 a.m., Free workshop on Medicare Part B and D coverage sponsored by Legal Aid of North Carolina Inc. and the National Council on Aging. After a short presentation explaining the potential benefits to seniors and disabled adults, the staff will meet with interested individuals to determine what benefits may help them save money. Call 704-786-4145 ext. 304 to schedule an appointment at the free workshop. Walk-ins will be accommodated on a first come, first serve basis.

Hed: Coming in August: Commodities registration

Senior adults in Cleveland County may qualify to receive U.S.D.A. Commodities, which are surplus foods from the government for low-income persons. Call to see if you qualify during pre-registration days each quarter. Income eligibility guidelines usually change yearly.

The Patrick Senior Center distributes commodities four times per year and pre-registration must be completed each time.

Pre-registration dates are Aug. 11, 12 and 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. The pick up date is Sept. 15 by 2:30 p.m.

Those who do not pre-register with the center in August, can pick up commodities at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds Sept. 16, beginning at 8 a.m.

Free legal services

Legal services are available Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. by appointment. Call 1-877-579-7562 to make an appointment.

Playing chess

The Senior Center is offering the opportunity to play chess at the center. A chess board will be furnished. If you are interested in playing Chess, call Sharon Eaker at the center and let her know you are interested and what day and time would be best for you.

The center offers several convenient services for seniors. Some of them include:

Postage s tamps sold in the gift shop

Free notary services by appointment

Medicare counseling by appointment

Equipment loans of wheelchairs, canes and bedside potty chairs

Resource book listing housing options, discount program, home health agencies and other information

T elephone reassurance - a volunteer will call daily to check on a person

Extra help for Medicare beneficiaries

Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for the federal Extra Help low income subsidy program if they have limited income and resources. The Extra Help program can increase cost savings by paying for all or part of the monthly premiums, annual deductibles and provide lower prescription co-payments under a Medicare prescription drug plan. To qualify for Extra help the monthly income must be limited to $1,471.25 monthly for an individual ($1,991.25 monthly for a married couple living together). Your resources/assets must not be more than $13,640 for an individual ($27,250 for a married couple living together). The assets/resources do not include a primary residence or a vehicle. There are also other Medicare Savings Programs that could help pay Medicare Part B Premium. To receive help, make an appointment with an insurance counselor.
